RURAL TELEPHONES. There is always something b;inp said about good roads;, there is always some movement on foot tc promote the good roads of th< State, and we would net for a moment discount the value ofifgooc roads, but there are other things we ought to talk more about and devote more of our time to than we do. and one of these things is the rural telephone. Of course, g"ood roads help, but two hundred rural telephones connected with the homes of two hundred farmers out from Belton would do more to promot^ the prosperity of the section of country surrounding this town, and would more closely unite the people of this section, than a hundred miles of macadam road bed built out from Belton. You may not think that this is true. It is a broad assertion to make a^nd we give you the right to disagree with us until we have had a chance to prove to you that it is a fact and no? merely a theory advanced by the editor of The Belton Times; bu? once you see the matter in the light that we see it, and in its true light, tV^pn ham mmII ?? ~ ? ? rVu mil iccognize trie advantage of the rural telephone. Let the farmers of th- State build up their farms and improve theii residences, and good roads are certain to follow. The farmers wil recognize the value to them of having good public highways running by their farms and they will go tc work to build the good roads. Givr us a progressive section and as cer tain as the night follows the day, good roads are going to find a beaten pathway into that section of - country. We admit that good roads ) are essential to a progressive people, but they just as naturally follow the lead of the progressive spirit. We . have good roads and lots of th.ni, and the really interesting and encouraging part of it is that they aie g*owing better as the ycars^yo by. ( Paths and narrow road beds cf a ? decade ago are now public high ? ways and the public highways ct 3 ten years ago are now becoming smooth boulevards. ? We are, as yet, cut off from et-ch other, in a sense, the ugh, because lt we have not stressed enough the building of rural telephone lines. Let one hundred farmers of this w section connect their homes with the exchange here in Belton and there JO will be one hundred farmers who have, in great measure, become citizens of the town. They have joined themselves to the town, and th.y ' have become interested in the growth and development of die * place. Thev naturally feel a deeper interest in Belton than they did before. They can telephone their friends in town, and we who have a heretofore been mere acquaintances ^ become neighbors and close friends, They telephone into town for whatever information they want and 5 haven't got?the rural telephone ^ will bind to the town of Belton the ^ farmers of this entire section, if we will develop the lines running out from this exchange. This is somer thint* we have not- li O ' the attention that it has really been due. Let's get busy; think oi what we have said in this article, and see j for vourself if it isn't worth your ^ while. Every farmer ought to have his home connected with the town e nearest him by telephone, and they will do it, if they arc shown the advantage that such a connection would be to them. Personally, we would rather see the farms of this s section connected with the telephone exchange here than the ores liiiu !
