pest will, beyond a shadow of a
doubt, eventually overrun the entire
field.
in practically every case thus far
investigated the spider entered the
: ield at a point nearest to a nearby
house yard in which grew violets
and other ornamental flowers and
their origin could be quite easily
traced to tire letter. When the violets
became overwhelmed, wilted
and r.eaily dead the pest transferred
to other plants closeby such as
sunflower, dahlia, hydrangea, rose,
oke weed and several kinds of garden
vegetables. In all, the red spider
has been seen and collected on
1 -r i different sorts of flowers, shrubs
and weeds up to the present date.
Of all these 41 varieties of hosts
one above all others seems to set
the "best table", the cultivated vioi
lot and the guest only leaves her
| hospitality when her cupboard is
bared. The others of these plants
fail prey s'mply because they stand
in the wa> of the onrushing herd of
devastators.
At present, then, the most practical
preventative measuTc is to os
tracse the innocent viokt from the
society of the front yard. On the
other hand, the most desirable remedial
measures seem, at present,
to consist t at the time of first attack
in pulling up and destroying
the few infested cotton plants, or, if
it has gone too frr for this to be
practical, then to apply one of the
sprays suitable for this pest, either
dry sulphur an.1 lime, boiled lime,
sulphur solution, or some other one
; of the reliable contact insecticides.
i1 "Come into my parlor," said the
s1 spider to the fly. "No thank you"
said the latter, ' I do not care to
die," "I know not what you'd fain
e pretend." Ked Spider spake with
s fright. "You'll know when the farmer
tumbles," said fly. "Yoirsure will
e be a sight."
