So we mu?t consider the conditions that exist and draw our conclusions therefrom. The "powers that be" at Lexington court house have absorbed the spheres of influence, and decreed that all roads lead to "Rome.'' They deny tha right of any section f the county to withdraw and when their force is in part broken and an indepemdent people conclude to subserve their interest and go wher. their business dictates. They lay an embargo on the county in order to ?ay dissatisfied portions to stay. Shall we in this section, Leesville i md Batesburg, any longer stay un der the domination of the Court House ring? They claim HI county f i.ids shall be kept in thei; banks, evoept occasionally small sums, may \- e deposited where it may do most gaad. Leesville and Batesburg contributes more than any other section he public treasury. So the fnnric largely their own, and when ~s . .if .. . . ten jp tad' a change tn o:nci > | r'onv result fuDcs be r ed in Leesville and Batesburg banks, a freat hue and cry was raised and aV?* . 1" *r*fA pmran'ra fr* prevent this thing. This shows the desperate expedients used to prevent our people from getting part of our own money on deposit and anv benefits our tax payers might get by the use of these funds. Any fool knows t lat the treasurer has to keep funds at the court house for immed iate use aad the way these reports were distorted and used, the last few days of the canvas shows the power they have to shape the destinies of the people; even to the detriment of certain sections the taxes that arc collected for the common good. There is to be paid this fall ane and a quarter mills excess for good roads. More will be paid by us than othor portions of the county. The court house being Rome the J rand' radiating from there will get the "lion* shire* that will direct Havel ?ud trade, and business and property ./ill be advanced. The free bridge over Saluda river to cost twelve thousand five hundred wi'l bs largely paid for by our itro towns, the benefits entirely absorbed by the business and property of the court house, as a portion of our people are inclin-d to vote them selves into Richland in order to serve their interest and convenience and in the exercise of their consti tutio* al rights. Such a howl is made thrtt ?.eu! i startle the dead, but t when it became evident that these peop.e k:f their rights and woulo dare defend them, a grand ^scheme v. as conceived. Twenty iivHBHM| and dollars a s offered then^^^^^? a large part ?f this vast s^HB We collected fr jm Leesville burg and adjacent territor^^^HH by that meaaa they can court house will still be th^H^^H for these good people anc^H^^H will follow Fawning" and cent ef benefit derived 2-, L: these collossal schemes enumerated will come our way. Will we continue to pull out the chestnuts for our enemies? Why not run a lir from Amick's Ferry to Gilbert, from i *:here to Pelion; from there to Pen in Aiken county; from there to Bethcar section; from there to Mt. Pleasj . I ant, and on to corner of Aiken and j Saluda county below Ridge Spiin.^. i Locate a court house at Lecsvillc, Summerland or Batesburg, and if \vt 1 have to pay big taxes we will get the benefit. The Aiken port on being remote from the:r county scat have been trying fyi yc r.s to get n a new county. I r.cy do nv> t o: thc'r trade with our towns and would be only too glad to dispatch ail other business at same places. We have the legal right and no one outside has any business to interfere, and we can discuss our interests and decide what is best for us without let or hindrance. The sections of Lexington county enumerated would be immensely | benefitted by the change, of course "Huckabaa Swamp" and the "Piedmont Highway" might suffer in a corresponding measure but let us keep our money at home and apply it to our own needs, build our roads j and such other improvements as j would advance to our prosperity.
