piece for posterity, there wore the
toot and tinkle of notes from the
Moorish minaret above the tenth
floor to the lordly janitor's quarters

The performers, however, were ar
tlsts and the medley did not disturb
llerr Otto Wlnklerhoff. instead, he
shut his black, snappy eyes, and roll
lng his bushy head upon his shoulders,
enticed from the grand piano a
thrice-beautiful sot of opening bars.

the professor, in true art ecstacy

Then he closed the groat, burning
eyes again, and, wagging the bushy
head, recommenced the divine work of
creation. An airy, seductive waltzstrain

bumped his head against the nymphs
in piuk and gilt upon the panel, and

sounded the magnificent soprano, in
a descending scale of errors.
Herr Wiuklerhoff brought both dellcute
hands down upon the keyboard,
producing u boom and blair like a
bar from the "Battle of Marengo,"
then he rushed into the hallway. The
door Btood ajar, disclosing a lady so
beautiful in her dreamy grace that
the professor forgot his frenzy and
fell down and worshiped.
Herr Winklcrhoff surrendered at
onco to Mmo. Kommler. And madame.
meeting the professor a good
half-wuy, insisted at times on singing
for him. At first Herr Winklerlioff
would throw up his slim white
hands, and, pleading sudden illnes?,
rush in artistic shudders from the 1
room; but, as his love grow beyond 1

At last lie had the ballad?as 1;
dreamy and enticing as ever drifted L
out from tho Blue Danube?and on t
that day Herr Winklerhoff spoke his s
heart to Mine. Etta, spoke with tho
fervor of the love-ballad in his guttrial
tones and the soul of the artist
shining from his black eyes. And
Mine. Etta responded in tremulous !
tones so that Herr Winklerhoff. huv- ^
ing the quick artistic instinct, knew
ut once that the hour of love had
come.
"Etta" he cried, "to der piano
come quick?und sing mit passion!"
And, dragging Mine. Etta into the
studio, ho played?once that the dlvlne
chords might sink into the very
soul of madamo, and again that sho
might sing. And madamo lifted up
thut grand, encompassing soprano
and rendered every note so true and
so compelling that on the fourth
floor young Horgers dropprd his
flute and Liederkanip, the German
barber, ceased "The Spanish Cava
Her" on tho .big tuba to listen in enchantment.
