KING COTTON
"Cotton is King" is an expression
that one hears frequently on the
street and in fact throughout this
broad land where the fleecy staple
is raised. Did you ever stop to
consider why this expression and
how virtually true is the statement.
The usefulness of the plant up to
a few years ago was rather limited
but today .1 has been pat to so'

Senator Crosson made a hard and
desperate fight for his highway bill
and we are very much disappointed
the measure did not go through.
The bill was a good one and would
have saved the state many dollars
and given our people good roads.
The Evening Record of Monday
states the following:
"There was vigorous debate in
the senate this afternoon upon Senator
Crosson's highway engineer
bill and the author of the measure
made a logical speech in favor of
the improvement of the public high
ways. He criticised the present
methods of working the roads by
means of chaingangs and said the
time was ripe for a more scientific
method. The opposition to the
bill was upon the ground of the expense
entailed upon the State."
By means of messenger, telegraph
and cablegram, information from
darkest Africa has been received
that ex-President Roosevelt will return
to this country in early May,
and that he will accept the public
reception that will be tendered him,
President Taft will be among the
first to greet Col. Roosevelt and all
the stories that have been told with
reference to the estrangement of
these distinguished men have dropped
to the ground. A returned
American who has been much with
Col. Roosevelt in Africa says that
he has it from the ex-President's
own mouth that he will not be a
candidate for Senator from New
York, or for mayor, or for Congress
with a view to election as Speaker
of the House and that furthermore
he will hot accept nomination for
the Presidency in 1912. He has recently
said that he desires nothing
more than the honor of being a pri- j
vate American citizen with a keen
interest in public matters, upon
which he expects to express his
dews at all times. There are fewAmericans
who will doubt the auihenticity
of this last assertion.
