York in teaching children to overcome
their fear ot anlm&ls. It is a
part of their instruction in natural Jfs
history, actually a first step, and a yL/
necessary one, for until they have
overcome their feeling of repulsion to IK
an animal or insect they are not able
to study It properly. Through the
self-consciousness of fear they do not
fake in the details of tho subjects
brought to their notice. xJ?G
Through the work of Mrs. Agnes L.
Roesler, who for tho last two years JJk
lias occupied the position known at the
museum as "instructor," many chlldren
have learned to look at animals YrfL
trom an entirely different viewpoint
Trom that which they learn unconsclously
at home. The most fastidious
little girl finally sees nothing but a dellghtful
pet in a small snake, holds it
teilderlv in her hands beseeches it for ? .
a touch of its soft forked tongue on
the cheek, and coddles an ugly look- jK
ing toad with real pleasure.
The work of the Instructor 1b unique
in Itself, and was first tried when
Mrs. Roesler joined tho museum forces yy
two years ago. Her work, while to
some extent with the grown people
she takes through the museum, giving
thom various facts of Interest, is 9?

where they find the subjects they require,
and in Individual children, not ?Sf
a large number, some of them children
of museum members, who come to the
museum at regular Intervals for Instructlons.
There are also individual
groups of children picked up casually
as thqj[ come as visitors who welcome xito
Instruction gladly and are apt pupils.
All the instruction given, whether 9f?
.udlvidual or ':i classes, has the one
point emphasized that the children
must overcome needless fear. They up
are told that there are certain aulmals
with which courage should be j|f\3
tempered with discretion. The teach- _
lug does not inculcate false sentimentaltty
toward the animals. This is wflp
carefully avoided. When Ihe children ^
show a tendency toward it they reeelve
more instruction tending to give
them a batter understanding of ua- ?^L.
ture's laws.

to be a revival of the primitive instlnct,
but it is not usual. One little
girl who came Into the room where
other children were handling the cjw
snakes today actually turned pale at
sight of them. She. I know, has been
brought up sensibly at home and to
fear nothing, but for some reason she c^*"
WU really frightened. But when she
saw that the other children were not
afraid she was soon quite willing to
take a snake herself. She turned
