Cotton continues to come to the
Batesburg market in large quantities
and the price is holding up. bringing
over twelve cents.
What awful cricks in the neck
we'll get when flying machine races
become the regular thing at the
county fairs.
The merry days of the school
children are about over and many
have gone to other places for the
coming school year. Our Batesburg
school has a large enrollment and
from the present outlook the school
will do good work.
The Lexington County Fair will
. take place this year October 26 to
28 and a very inviting premium list
has been distributed Mr Samuel
B. George had charge of the premium
list this year and the catalogue
does him credit, Lexington
promises to have a good fair this
season. ?

The unexpected and premature
death of E. H. Harriman is a startling
reminder of the limitations of
money. He could handle the most
intricate industrial problems of the
world, but not his own physical
condition, and his humblest clerk
has a better chance of real happiness

Are our merchants prepared to
meet the competition, constantly
growing more attractive to the unthinking,
of those alluring fall catalogs
from the metropolitan departstores?
Of course the bargains at
home are better when you consider
that the home merchant gives you
personal attention and the chance
to return goods that are not what
was represented. But the public
forgets this trade has to be drummed,
and the only efficient drummer
for the home merchant is the local
newspaper.
COTTON SITUAUION I
There is no doubt hut what- tKIc I
years crop of cotton will fall far
short of even an average yield but it
depends more largely than usual
upon the farmers as to what the
price shall be.
The mill men are combined for
the double purpose of buying the
raw material as cheap as possible,
and to sell the manufactured goods
as high as possible. They are in
the business for protit, and they had
just as soon make it out of the producer
as the consumer and as a
matter of fact they usually make
money out of both. They know
that a large percentage of farmers
put their cotton on the market between
now and November the 1st

this opportunity to buy cotton for
less than its real value. Under ordinary
circumstances, as last season,
they buy enough cotton during this
period of time to be able to control
the price for the balance of the
year.

give the bank your certificates as
security for what you owe them or
if you owe a merchant borrow money
on your certificates and pay him.
This business of rushing such a
bulk of cotton on the market in
September and October is nothing
more nor less than business suicide
on the part of farmers. It would be
a mighty fine thing if the farmers
' could run on a cash basis. The
same thing would be true of a merchant,
a cotton factory, a railroad, a
coal mine, a bank or any other industry
but everything is run more
or less on a credit basis and we may
never hope thai the farming industry
will be much different from what
it is now in that respect. What the
farmer needs is a spreading out of
his selling season, but don't hold
your cotton at home when you are
in debt. This is cmbarassing to
your creditor and is a slouchy dishonest
way of doing business.
We long to see the time when our
| farmers will act on good business
principles.
OUR SMALLER SCHOOLS
The above editorial suggests the *
fact that we need industrial education
in our smaller schools. It has (

purpose of our common schools;;

farmer or a mechanic or a practical1 *
man. Education along lines that J n
count have been neglected. We ^
call the farmer the "Backbone" oft,
the country, but we do nothing to .
