In the jute mills in India the wages of men are from $2.00 to $3.00 per month, women $1.50 to 2.00, children $1.00 to $1.75. We cannot conceive of how they live on such a small income. It makes one almost starve to death to think about it. We are told that their mode of living is very primitive but surely their knowledge and practice of economy is up-to-date. THE PRESENT JURY SYSTEM. The Greenville Piedmont says? As long as we continue a system whereby a juryman's private interests may be jeopardized and rendered worthless while paid attorneys occupy the attention of the courts to any extent they please, our jury system will continue to be weak. There is little justice or reason in requiring a citizen to sacrifice everything he has simply to give somebody in whom he has no interest whatever a trial. It is a bit hard that 12 men should suffer for the sins of some worthless customer who would be better off if put in jail without any trial at all. But, then, the "dignity of the law" onrt the fireworxs would be c .. v ' we suppose we will i.jvt ; ic C'-'. with the weak inrv system. ? .1 ' ; i not do away with ev<: )- r sm of our governcitizen is called upon .:.c.c*oc inmself for the public good. We thank God for the jury system and any other system which lays the burden of responsibility upon individuals. There is nothing wrong with the system. 'Tis true that it is being abused by lawyers but more so by such as are incapable i as our contemporary evidently is) of appreciating the full purpose and effect of this "pillar" of democracy. We might guard it by raising the standard of citizenship in the whole land, but change it, never. MUSIC FESTIVAL We hail with delight the coming Musical Festival in Columbia. Considered from every point of view we see no reason why such an entertainment should not meet with greater success there than in any other part of the state. There are two up to date female colleges from either of which efficient directing talent might be obtained and there is plenty of local talent from which a high class chorus might be selected. This being true we feel sure that the comingevcnt, in quality, will equal or overshadow the well known Spartanhurtr Festivals The mncir lrwv. ers throughout the state should take an interest in making this festival a financial success for Columbia is more accessible, and more favorably located for an annual continuance of such an inspiring and beneficial entertainment.
