. D. FARR TOOK
HIS OWN LIFE
ADJUST BEEN ELECTED
SUPERINTENDENT OF
EDUCATION. |
10 CAUSE HAS BEEN
FOUND.
IS ACTION WAS A GREAT SORVRISE
TO THE ME 'IBERS OF
HIS FAMILY.
News was brought to the city Mon I
ay that John D. Farr, recently elec- 1
id superintendent of education for ]
iexington county, had committed 11
licide at his residence in Chapin, a
nail station 23 miles from Columbia
n the Columbia, Newberry & Lau:ns
road. The suicide occurred du- i
ng the early hours of yesterday ;
lorning. So far as is known there
as no cause for this act and the
tembers of the family of Prof. Farr
rc at a loss to know why he should
avc taken his own life.
Monday night Mrs. Farr was aakened
by a noise in the room and
bserved that her husband was up
nd walking about. This was some
me after midnight and Mrs. Farr
tade no mention to her husband !
bout being up c t this hour nor did
ie think of anything unusual in his
tanner at the time. In a few mintes
he left the room and still the
itc paid no attention to what Mr.
'arr was doing.
Within a half hour alter Mr. Farr
ad gotten up, Mrs. Farr heard the
sport of a gun but she still did not
onnect this with th\ absence of her
usband. But, when \he did not re- ?
urr? within an hour she got up and
cave th<WJ-arm. Neighbors were calico
Ui id- se-rch aspm 'die prem ,
iscs revealed the tact T?,*n tin.
gun that belonged to Mr. Farr and
had been kept in the bedroom was
not in its place. This excited some
suspicion and a more thorough
search was made about the yard. |
On entering the barn the horrible
sight of a dead body with the head
blown away and the brains scattered
over the barn floor met the eyes of
the searchers. The gun belonging to
Mr. Farr wa found by {he s^e '

to the fact that the dead man had
committed ? nicide. Mr. Farr had repaired
to the barn to take his life
an 1 had laid 1 :s plans well in the
cai'yhoar of mo: tun ? that much
was shown by the body cold in death
will, the toj of his head blown entire.y
off. When the body was
found'die h d been extinct for more
than an hour and a half.
With no inaneial embarassment,
with family relations all that could
he he ired and with no other trouble
j so fat as was known to his fellow
nan i. i t ha: i to find a cause for the
.a ..a '. Dr. 11. Kleazcr, who was
Mr. 1 arr's physician, was here yesterday
and hi speaking of the suicide
expressed surprise that Mr.
Far. . hould have taken his life. "I
haw treated.him for some nervous
trouble," said Dr. Eleazer, "and he
was nan of nervous temperament,
but h:i>si.icicie could not be attribute
. a ... tt. . like this. He was
a v.tii u;? we wai and he will be
ni .oCv. by t. c community in which
he resided."
i'herc is some slight evidence that
Mr. Farr's ndnd was unbalanced at
ti.e ti.ne h committed suicide,
caking to friend Sunday, the
ay before he took his life, Mr. Farr
rc u . k 1431 snowea no was
i ! ler ; lental depression.
; My mind is all torn up. I
think it would bo pre'.erable to be
dc::d than that .1. '.tors should be as
