the day upon which Franklin is to be fl

The testimony showed that Mr. d
Henry E. Valentine was a constable f
for his brother. Magistrate J. 1. Valentine
and had been given a war rant ]
to serve on the negro Franklin.
. Not knowing the negro, he took Mr.
W. M- tarter w'th him, the latter
knowing the negro well. I
They left home very early in the
morning so as to apprehend the negro
before he left his home for the day's
work, but on [arriving at the liomc of
Mr. Saul Spire, nearhv, they decided
to ask his assistance. c
At their request Mr. Spires went to c
the negroe's house and asked him to t
eome and plough that dav but the i
negro refused to do so. a
Messrs. Valentine and Carter then ?
went to Franklin's house, where they c
fSund the. door open and heard talk- a
tng within. They knocked, but got !
no answer and Mr Valentine sent a

The secretary of state on Monday
issued a commission to the Chapin
Manufacturing company of Chapin,
Lexington county. The capital is
placed at $75,000 and the concern will
manufacture yarn and other cotton

room, is missing and Is presumed to
have bjen burned to death. The loss
will reach 115,000, fully insured .

and two daughters survive her in this
county. The funeral will lake place
