NEGRO WOMAN.
T. D. Mitchell of Brookland has been
bound over to appear for trial at Lexington
in An .just on tlie charge of attempt
to rape. The prosecuting witness
is Emuia Lu^ man. a negro woman
who accuses Mitchell of annoying
her.
The amount of bond was fixed at
1350 by Magistrate A. R. Bach man,
who held a preliminary yesterday. P.
fl. Stallinga and C. T. Weed are the
bondsman. Stalllngs said yesterday
that it ia all a tight on Mitchell because*c?.?jatter
does not bear a good
name in the cUPtuunity and he believes
Mitchell is innocerL Stallings said
also that the prosecuting witness has
a had reputation.
At the hearing before the magistrate,.
Sophie Bates and Emma Lomau testi- ~ ?
lied. The charge in the indictment
declares "that T. l>. Mitchell did willfully
make an assault with criminal
intent upon the person of Emma Lowman."
The woman's evidence was that site
had been followed by Mitchell to the
house where she was stopping and that
ne grabbed at her and fell over a
wheelborrow or he would have caught
her. There are several people in
Brook land who disbelieve the charges
although others are prepared to believe
them.
Mr.chell was arrested about two
years ago on the charge of violating
the election laws, lie was town marshnl
at Brookland 11,en. lie was convicted
at Lexington Later Mitchell
was convicted of gambling and sentenced
to pay a flue of $15 and speud
two hours in jail.
