was noticed in the northern heavens
Tuesday night, caused by the burning
of a negro church and four cabins
three miles outside the city limbs,
the women was terrified and she remained
awake all Tuesday night,
singing and praying. The terrible
nervous strain under w hich she labored
all that night and Wednesday was
more than die could stand. Wednesday
she was seized with a sudden
nervous attack and she died before
medical aid could reach her. Tire

of the currency and now president of

Chicago, introduced him. The Atlanta
Constitution says Mr. Kekels is
a man of great prominence in the
business world of the west, and bis ut
terances upon any subject are always
of value; but much more than ordinary
interest will attach to his discussion
of the particular matter, to which he
turned his attention upon this occasion.
His argument, that the real solution
of the negro problem will lie found
when the people of the north realize
that it is vastly more important to

did not help matters as the negroes
are still excited. The Chariest n Post
says negroes spent last night again in
the streets, parks and along the water
front, fearing that the senseless
prbpheey of the woman may yet K
realized. Many of the negroes who
crossed the river by the Ashley bridge,
and in small boats, when they saw
the reflection of the lire in tin;
suburbs, have not returned to the city.

that the expected catastrophe might
catch them in their beds or rooms,
which seemed a thing to he avoided.
It is remarkable that such a condition
of affairs should prevail for so
long a time among the negroes, but it
is all owing to the general ignorance
of the tlie people. Some of the
negroes have taken even their children
from school, fearing that accident

were then made for the meeting

Mr. McConnell gave this account of
the shooting of Col. Lane: "Tin
battle was nearing its close at tJett>sburg,"
he said, "and only eight men
of the fifty-four in our company in the
Twenty-fourth Michigan regiment
were left. Our ammunition was exhausted,
hut 1 had one cartridge left,
which was to be tlie last shot we tired
at (Jett-ysburg. As I loaded my rille
my lieutenant commander said:
'Charlie, see that splendid color-bearer,
cannot you throw him over?" and
he pointed to the colonef not as far as

my last cartridge and 1 am going to
try.' I replied as 1 rested my rule
against a small tree and took careful
aim at the man waving his colors and
shouting to his men. 1 tired, saw him
fall and then hastened to join my
comrades retreating through Gettysburg
to Gulp's Hill."

shoulder. "It was just as the battle

the illustrious Twenty-sixth regiment.
Cot. Harry K. Iturgwvn, brother of
Col. W. 11. S. Hurgwyn, was killed in
the same battle that catne so near
costing Col. Lane his life.
Col. \V. 11. S. Iturgwvn took Col.
Lane and Mr. McCotinell on a drive
over tlie city. They went out to
Crabtree, when* the Twenty-sixth
North Carolina regiment, was organized,
and (!ol. Lane saw- bis lirsl s"iviee
as a private in Company K. Ti.e
camp was then under Col. Hurgwyn
as commandant. They then went to
the cemetery to view t he monument
to Col. Hurgwyn, visited the Soldiers'
home and spent an hour with t ie old
veteians, then to the State library to
see the painting of the three colonels
of the Twenty sixth North Carolina
regiment, Vance, Hurgwyn and Lane.
Coi. W. II. S. liutgwyn then gave
them a dinner party at the Yarboro.
Col. Lane left for Ids home in Chatham.
Mr. and Mrs. McConnell go to
Weldon to visit Col. and Mrs. llurgwyn.
Mr. McConnell is president of
the. Veterans' Association of the Iron
Brigade of the Army of the 1'otomac
at Chicago and is a highly successful
wholesale druggist. lie is six feet
tall, well proportioned, with his hair
and mustache almost white, stands
perfectly erect and appears as agile as
a youth.

A Spartanburg dispatch to The
Stale says Thursday alternoon Jim

oilice. They relented a pitiful tale <?f
misery how some white men had
taken .lim Pruitt from his house last
Tuesday night and administered on
liis hare limbs a severe whipping; so
lacerating and bruising him that lie
was sen ret ly able to walk. It appears,
howevi r. that he made out t journey
to that city one week later, lie was
certainly well Hogged. Neither dim
uor his wife seem to know why the
men whipped him. The white cappers
threatened them with deatli it they
made any mention of the lawless occurrence.
Magistrate Kirby referred
i.hcm, by letter, to Magistrate Mike
l'atton. at Cross Anchor, who will
doubtless investigate the ease and put
an end to such proceedings.
Foili Killed.
Four men killed and two badly
burned by an explosion of gas in the
mines of the Chartres Coal and Coke
company at Federal, a mining town
near Itridgcville on the Pittsburg,
Chartres and Youghii gheny railroad
Tuesday. The mine is hut slightly
injured.
Acquitted.
Mrs. Filie L. Carson, who shot and
killed llohert Kigsby in Macon, (la.,
some inontlis ago for making slanderous
remarks about her, has been acquitted.
When the verdict of the
jury was announced there was considerable
applause.

that have visited southern Nebraska
in years, passed over portions

the minister and injuring a

aided hy a negro. The man was John
Lake. The negro who aided him wai
known as Sandy. Lake, who was in
