The election here and all over the
county, so far as we have heard, passed
otT quietly. The people simply came
and expressed their clu ice of the different
candidates for the different of
flees. This* was their privilege and
duly, and it is to be hoped that in the
discharge of that duty they have acted
wleely and consistently. Can the sovereign
people do any wrong? It is
magnanimous to suppose t'>at they
cannot. They should always guard
with a Jealous eye their liberties, in
this their conscience and intellect will
properly become their guide, and thei
ballot their weapon.
The question which now calls for
actual legislation in not only South
Carolina, hut in our whole land, is t?>e
matter of allowing small children to
labor in the cotton mills. This burning
subject was brought before our
last Legislature, but from variou"
causes a bill to limit the employment
of ungrown boys and girls in factories
wa- defeated by a narrow margin.
This year the cause seeim to have gathered
new impetus and stronger supporters,
for many of those who seek to
represent our law-making body next
Ression have coma out on its side.
There seems no doubt that some legisation
of some kind will (hid enactment
at some near day upon this very question.

A serious conflagration occurred in
Leesville last night. Every effort to
check the course of the devouring
flames was of no avail and the lire
burned itself out. A special message
to The State by long distance telephone
at a lute hour last bight gave

About 10 o'clock tonight u fire originated
in the town hall and from there
rapidly spread to tlie waiehouse ol Mr.
Jocob Austin and tlience to hie mercantile

All of these buildings, togealher with
a barber shop, were entirely destroyed
