Ha"'- is giving the people of the Dutch Fork an excellent paper and he deserves a liberal patronage from his people. Few people realize the i- trouble and expense necessary to the conduct of a news-paper. * ? Can't we have a lyceum course here next fall? A town which has as many college graduates and as many people of intelligence, should use their t;me and influence for the pormotion of an organization that does much to elevate nod improve the mind. We are indeed sorry to see s> little mterest manifested, it argues no good for our place and people. Let us, with a resolute purpose, set to work to have this courss and secure lirat class attractions that wi'I enliven the dull winter season. at the same time benefit our hearts and minds. 11 is appearcnt to the casual obsevor that there is a great lack of public spirit in our town. Occasionally there is evidece of it, hut it is spasmodic. The time has been when our people were thoroughly imbued with a strong desire to accomplish a desired Object, for the development and welfare of our town and section, and by a strong pull, and a pull together, the desired result was realized. The people of this town have reached a period when they must cease to he content with attending strictly to their private airair.s, content with making a > living and a few sheckles for a rainy y day. When the business men of a place pull for self, with out regard to ?lnv:i oi i offers greater possibilities ^ llatesburg. Fortunately, there are a few men who realize that to attain success there must be unity of action. There is plenty of idle capital here, tint couId he profitably invested in enterprises that would bring desireable citizens here and also attract trade from a distance. Let our people look the situation 1:1 the face fairly and squaiely, and not allow selfishness to control their action. There have been several enterprises agitated and we want to see tlieni all re ilized, if al 1 cannot he developed at this time, let us have the ones that will do the town the most, good, the others will come in oppetune time. SONS OF THE SUNNY SOUTH. Congressman Levw Tiik Orator ok the Evening. At a banquet, given by two score sons of the Southland, offsprings of the heroes of the Southern Confederey, dined together, says the Washington Post of March 9th, !a?t night at the banquet hall of Barton's. The sneaker of tin* eventm* una i?..n_ i reselltative Ashbury Frances Lever who was humorously introduced to the ? gathering' as the "baby member of the House.', Mr. Leve~, who hails from the Seventh district of South Caroline, is a most youthful-appearing gentleman slight as to stature and boyish in appearance. He was the prime favorite, however, ar.d his remarks were greeted with warm appreciation. He said he considered it 11 great honor for one to be the son of a Confederate , soldier. "What the Southland gave ' to the civil war she gave to this glorious country." he said. "We are glad | there was a war, for it showed to the world such men as Lee and Eirly and scores of others whom the world has never equaled for chivalry and gallantry. The Confederate flag was an emblem of courage and heroism and an insignia of buttle." YOrSO MRS IN POMTlCS () "Go home, you chaps," said Mr. I Lever. "Tell tlie people ia your d s- b trict that the men who fight tlieir hat- * ties want to have some of the otllces , n and some ol the honors. Th? time has ti come for the young man of the South y to get iuto polities. Go home and or- d ganize and tell the people what you w think about affairs. and they will send jj you toCongressns they sent ine. You ( have a glorious ancestry and a glorious y countty. The South has not yet be- st gun to develop. The sons of the men w who carried the Stars and Oars to vie- 11 tory in dozens of battles will, I know, J" In have sufllcent courage to take up the c l: ; banner ot industry in the South and plant it so high that nothirg shall ever dislodge it. The South has begun to realize her condition and the days are bright for her." Our 8aluda Letter. Mr. James S. Mhldleton, of Atlanta tin. special agent "for the .TOtna Insurance Compuny was in town Thursday and Friday of last week with, a view of ascertaining the liability of the .Ktna by reason of the great fire here recently. Seven of the twelve sufferers from the conflagration held polices in Mr. Middleton's company, aggregating 8,700. The majority of the claims have already practically been adjusted and the others will be seltleed just as soon as it is possible for him to arrive at the extant of the damage sin tain. Mr. Miuclctou left eu.iy Saturday morning for Atlanta, but will either re turn himself in a few days or send n representative to close up mattirs here We feel justified in saying that there will be no trouble in reaching a satissactory settlement in each Instance and that the remainder of the adjust ments will be made as soon as possible, under I be polieeis all insurance companies have sixty days to make adjustment but they in ually settle within a much shorter period. Uncle Matt Sm'th whose peculiar affliction was mentioned last week is gradually growing weaker and there appears to he no hope for his recovery. Mr. S. 1. Itiley formely of this county, but now a resident of Co'umbia was in our city hist week, at the bed side of his father-in-law Mr. Smith. Quite a good number from our town attended the Union meeting at Richland Spring Sunday. Mr. Geo. 1). Caiighman, who came to Saluda a few years ago and who has interest in the roller mill, has moved his family back to his old home near Kinarils. Inspector Hussly of the Post Office department is conducting an examination to day (Monday) for the rural free delivery route heretofore Ir. charge of Mr. W. II. Crawford. This route 11 ow pays $000, It is not yet known who the lucky applicant will b While it is not u settle fact, yet it is more than p -obable that Mr.Etheredge will build not only two but four brickstores on the lot where his other was burned. Two of these stores will occupy the old site, and face main street. The oiher two will be erected in the i rear and face church street. We are also Kafe in predicting the t? rection during Hi*- summer or n two story brick structure on the corner of wbut is known as law range. This build -ing will con'ain, two store rooms, an apartment for a bank, and twelve cllic.'S, or u opera hall. Attorney Able lias bought ttie dwelling 011 church avenue belonging to K. a. A fatal accident came near befalling Claude Dotuiujck a few days ago. He and Lee Ctoucli were hewing out some sills, while Crouch was cutting away on a leg, Dominick attempted to pick up a tool near liiin and as he straightened up the blade of Crouch's axe split his scalq a hand's breath. The wound received was slight and is healing nicely. Mrs. Winn, who has been quite sick for several days is still confined to her bed. M r. and Mrs. Noah Crouch are slow- j ly recovering from a severe case of la | grippe. Later: Mr. Crawford was the only applicant for the route referred to above. Having passed a satisfactory examination he will get the position. Tnu Address ok Mrs. Stevens, AT I.EE8V1LI.K. Printed hj request.
