EMBARGO ON K WILL f > South Carolina Senators Win Fight for Aid of Farmers & . . ~ p|; Washington, Aug. 8.?Senator Smith > of South Carolina, who appeared last ^ week with Senator Frelinhysen of \New Jersey and a delegation of farmers before the fwar trade board to urge the lifting of the embargo against imports of potash from enemy countries, was informed by the board today that from this dates such imports might be fraolv mnrio frflm PVPrv Sdlirfio ftXCCDt Hungary and such parts of Russia as remain under Bblshevik control. ' ( I Retention of the embargo until October was demanded by producers of trona potash and other American potash interests, their expectation being that by that date congress would have provided a protective tariff and that their own production would be equal to domestic- demands. Farmers opposed this policy on the ground that some of the American potash had wrpught damage to crops. William Banks of the South Carolina departt-r&r of agriculture exhibited photographs, taken in the Pee Dee region of his State, showing many instances of such damage. Heretofore potash could "be imported only under certificate of yx.-, non-enemy origin. Representatives of the American^ jr. I then put about three tons of agricultural lime to the acre, using a lime distributor, and by using this, it is not necessary to harrowin the lme. Then I apply five hundred to six hundred pounds of fertilizer per acre, something like an 8-3-3. I then planted about twenty to twenty-five pounds of seed to the acre. The seed, of course should be inoculated before sowing. I run a light harrow over the land, then use a roller, a corrogated roller is best. After doing this, I never do anything else to the alfalfa but 'harvest it. That of course is done with a regular mowing machine. Usually, I mow my alfalfa in the morning. If the weather is hot and dry, I rake it into windrows that afternoon. The next afternoon I haul it up. If alfalfa is allowed to stay on the ground too. long, it loses all its leaves. The curing of alfalfa is l'ke the curing of any other hay.' It requires some judgment to take 'advantage of weather conditions. "As to feeding, I feed it to my horses, cows and hogs. They all like it and do well on it. "Las't year I plowed up a field of ten acres that had been planted about five years, and was beginning to have a good many weeds in it. I prepared this land and planted it in corn and it made the best of corn that I have ever grown. I know of nothing that I think will build up our soil as well as alfalfa."
