DaqRECrrOR LONG IMPROVING. Ckfaisonn College, Aug. 5.?It will "be gojod news to all Extension Service workers and to his many friends over South Carolina that Mr. W. W. Long, director of Extension Service, may return to his post in the fall. At the recent meeting of the board of trus. tees President Riggs had letters from Dr. Jong's physicians saying that he wodld be able to return to work in a few months. Mr. Long has been out since last December on account of his health, and everybody will welcome v his return. The Board of Trustees continued Assistant Director D. W. Watkins as Acting Director until the return of Mr| Long. The resignation of Dr. Gee from his li'V;'-'-. position as Assistant Director was'accepted by the board w-ith regrets. Dr. Gee has been elected professor of rural economics in the University of South Carolina, a position for which his training and experience have made him well fitted. There is really nothing to canring vegetables and fruits except j esh products, jars, heat, care and ceanliness. Can nothing that can be kept with cut canning. Dry such vegetables as J corn, string beans, mature lima beaas, j etc. Concentrate products, especially soup mixtures, so that each container will hold as much canned goods and as little water as possible. Pickle or brine suitable vegetables in crocks. It is now time to transplant your celery. Put the plapts in 5-foot rows, six inches apart in the row. It pays to set celery in wide deep furrows in order that the soil may be gradually worked to the plants as they grow. Now is the time to plant that fall j crop of Irish potatoes, and to transplant cabbage for fall use. To control celery blight, spray plants every t^vo or three weeks with ' Bordeaux mixture, 4-4-50.
