BY WAY OF PARTING.
I
In retiring from The Dispatch- i
(
isews I am frank to confess that J do i
so with a feeling- of keen regret on ^
the one side and "with a feeling of
pardonable pride on the other. I
regrret'to leave the friends, who by
their loyalty and devotion, have
made The Dispatch-Xews a success
i
I from the first day I entered into the
business?to leave those friends who
have shown their unshaken confidence
inn me during the years I
have been in the publishing business,
and who have made it possible
for me to make honest bread for
myself and family. Again, I regret
to leave the office force to whom I
have become more attached each
day, and who have proven their fidelity.
and friendship during my
connection with the paper. However,
the best ef friends must part;
and no matter where I may go these
friends, thank God, shall be my
friends still, and I shall be theirs.
Publishing a newspaper, even in a
prosperous county like Lexington, is
neither a gold mine nor a gravy
train. Human nature is the same
the world over, and there have always
been those wrho have thought
that new*spapcr men have easy sailing.
Such, however, is not the case.
It is an uphill business at best, and
it has been unusually hard on all
publishers during the period of the
f.var. Prices on all printing material
have advanced by leaps and bounds?
almost out of all reason?and are
still advancing. But, by the help ef
our friends, we have been able to
eke out an existence and to let our
helpers live.
While I am retiring from the
newspaper business, 1 am not leaving
Lexington, neither is it my intention
to leave. I love the people
of I.?-xipytcr. v'or.niy?comity

RICHLAND BOND ISSUE. ?
The overwhelming1 vote by which
the people of Richland declared in i j
favor of a two million dollar bond
issue for good roads is but another t
evidence of the sentiment that is
prevailing throughout the State.
Whenever the people have spoken j
they have expressed their willingness

proper safeguards are provided for f
the expenditure.
The administration of the Richland
funds will be in the hands of capable
and trustworthy business men
and the prospect appears bright for r
the success of the undertaking. t
Richland has set the pace for mid- t
die and lower Carolina as did Green- ?
ville for the Piedmont. Other counties
will rapidly fall in line.
WELL IX)\E~
Fewer men who have served in 3
Congress from South Carolina have 3
retired with such universal regret on *
the part of their constituents and (
such deserved popularity among their f
fellow-members as Hon. A. Frank 3
Lever upon his resignation from the
present Congress. His 18 years of service
have been characterized by an 1
unremitting zeal for the interests of *
his district and State. The success of
the Democratic nartv in recent year
placetl him in a position of great pow_
er and usefulness to'the nation at
large, and he amply measured up to
the added responsibilities. The people
of Lexington county and of thejc
Seventh District are proud of his record
of service, and will watch with 1
interest his future career, firmly he- <
lievinjr that hg will not fail to take full s
advantage of tho opportunities for wi. s
der usefulness which will be present- j
ed to him by his new work*, They twish
him well and expect to hear from j
him further in national affairs. j 2
