CHRISTMAS.
* Once again, in its appointed season,
the cycle of time has completed its
course, and another year passes into
history. Nineteen hundred and eight
een, full of deeds of mankind in
which human life was cheap, full of
the horrors of international warfare,
has run its race, and in common with
the rest of the years that are passed,
has drawn to its destined end.
^ It has been a year of solemn and
significant change. Amid all of the
events that" have attended its course,
none are of greater import than the
fastly transpiring scenes that mark its
final close. Twelve months ago the
future was filled with potents of ill
omen to the most optimistic, hut in
^ God's ordered way and in His appoint
ed time, with the ebb of the *year
there passes forever into oblivion the
nable war clouds that for four weary
years have enshrouded the cause of
humanity and civilization.With the
dawn of the Christmas season comes
the light of peace, and the season that
commemorates the birth of the Prince
of Peace fulfills the prophesy of old
'TPeace on earth, good will towards
men." ;
A retrospective glance into the year
that is passing reveals many accomplishments
of which, as a people, we j
are justly proud. First of all, we j
, . note the realization of the high purpose
to which we of America, engag- j
ed in a world war, have carried our
ideals, our mission of ministry to hu- j
inanity, and in the attainment of that j
ideal, destiny seems to have decreed
to us the peculiar position to point
the way for an advanced civilization
among" the nations of the earth. In
that lofty endeavor, let it he our solemn
prayer that America may continue
her mission guided by the spirit
of Him whose nativity the Christmas
season marks. With the advent
of nineteen hundred and nineteen,
as we fashion the blades "?f war-fare
into the plough of peace, ? s the heroes
without heroics who enlisted in
the cause of victorious democracy,
return to the walks of quiet honor
and industry, let us not be unmindful
of the significance of a Life which began
over nineteen centuries ago?a
I^fe whose ideal was the mission of
service, a Life whose sum total of
4eed was comprehended in the one,
word?love.
THE COMPLIMENTS OF
THE SEASON".
In this season oV good will we take
this opportunity to extend to the read ,!
ers of the Dispatch-News our wishes j
for a Merry Christmas and a Happy I
and Prosperous New Year.We trust
that their measures of happiness and J
success may be full to the over-flow- j
i*g happiness and success may b#
full o the over-flowing.
."We are keenly appreciative of the
forbearance our readers and patrons
"have evidenced during- the past year. I
"We have labored under numerous, (
/ and sometimes almost overwhelming
difficulties, but invariably the short-comingrs
on our part have been borne
fry our friends with patience. As a
token of our appreciation we promise
te endeavor to give better service for
the coming year. With the end of I
t -Vie war many of the difficulties that
have continually confronted the issuing
of a newspaper will cease, and we
hope, during the next twelve months,
to publish a paper which shall be
truly representative of the spirit and
progress of our people.
