PROCLAMATION
At no time in the history of our
country has the menace of fire been
greater and the preservation of our
resources more necessary. Activities
of hostile incendiaries threaten in
many parts of the country, causing
destruction of needed supplies of food
stuffs and other vital staples. These
fires will strike at the foundation of
national power and wealth by the elimination
of resources.
Fire causes enormous direct destruc
tion of cotton, lumber, grain and other
foodstuffs, as well as a large variety
of other materials essential to
the prosecution of the war. Fire
criples productive industry engaged
upon war orders to a far greater extent
than is generally realized.
While causing a vast impairment
in America's fighting efficiescy, fire
loss is, in the main, unnecessary. The
loss cqn be materially t lessened if
each citizen will do his part * towards
seeing that precautionary measures
are adopted-for his premises. The!
burning of your property through j
negligence or carelessness may not ;
only cause you loss and inconvenience j
but the fire may spread to your neigh I
toor's property also. Fire prevention, j
therefore, becomes a patriotic duty j
of every citizen. The cooperation of
newspapers, civic bodies, and particularly
school systems, will contribute
powerfully to this end. The annual
loss by fire to the state of South Caro
lina is approximately One Million,
Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand )
Dollars.
In view of the importance of the
matter, and as a means of arousing !;
our citizens to the magnitude of the
fire waste and induce them to take |
more interest in the subject of fire |1
prevention, T, Richard I. Manning, I
Governor of the State, by virtue of
authority in me vested, do hereby des
ignate and proclaim
Saturday, November 2, 1918 as
FIRE PREVENTION. DAY
and urge that ou 4his day all citizens '
inspect their property and give per- j
sonal attention to the removal therefrom
of all rubbish and debris; that;
chimneys, flues and heating appara- I
tus be put in order; that the mayor of j
each town and city toy proclamation j
ask thee ooperation of its citizens in j
having a thorough inspection of all j
premises .in their respective muriici- .
nnlitips. to the end that the number
of fires may be lessened and the loss- j
es therefrom, checked.
