LOSS ESTIMATE!) $0,765,000 I OWENSBORO, KY.t?Aug. 27.? The Green River distillery and warehouses were burned Saturday night, together with approximately 137,,COO, 000 drinks of whiskey contained in 43,000 barrels that were stored in bond. The whiskey alone was valued at 32.840.000 while the tax loss to the United States Government through its destruction by fire is approximately 36.750.000. The value of the buldings and machinery was estimated roughly at $175,000 making the total loss in excess of 9,765,000. The blaze started at 7 o'clock Saturday night in a pile of trash alongside the distillery bottling plant, which burned first. The flames then communicated to a warehouse contain ing 9.000 barrels of whiskey and then to the still house. Two other warehouses containing 34,000 barrels of whiskey burned despite every effort that had been made to click the blaze' The fro was spectacular in the extreme. flumes mounting hundreds of feet in the air. Every few minutes a blazing barrel 1 o.f whiskey, driven upward by the explosion of other barrels would rise to a great height and then fall. When it struck, the whiskey it contained would be spread over the ground in a blazing sheet for many yards. Burning streams of whiskey ran j through the ditches of the open fields ; into the Ohio River the whole surface of which seemed at times to be on fire. The difference in the value placed upon the whiskey and the amount of tax estimated to nave neen iost ny tne 'Government is acounted for by tiio fact that the international revenue tax had not been paid on any of it and the valuation placed upon it was the value of spirits taxed unpaid. The tax on whiskey is $:;.20 a proof gallon and the average eo.ntents of abarrel of whiskey when first placed in the ware key when first placed in the warehouse with no "outrage" allowance is 4 7 \-'l gallons. m The fire started shortly before 7o'clock and in three hours all of the ] buildings were in ruins. The plant I consisting of three warehouses distil-- / j lery and bottling plant fell easy prey j to the flames, as it was without fire. : protection. There had been no steam j in the boilers since last September, I when the Government placed a ban I on the manufacture of alcohol, and i employees of the company residing | near by were unable to utilize the fire , fighting equipment maintained in the distillery premises. According- to the watchman on duty ! thef ire had its origin in rubbish and is believed to have been due to the carelessness of a smoke. When discovcred the fire had spread to a car ! of whiskey on a siding and from the 1 car the flames spread to the bottling ! plant and one after the other, i The distillery property was built by i John W. MeCulloch in 1002 and con' sistcd of three modern warehouses of 1 brick construction,a bottling plant j built of corrugated iron sheotng and i wood, and the distillery itself which | was of wood construltion. j Mr. MeCulloch sold the property j and whiskey in storage to the New j Vork company two years ago.
