left her home alt College Place, Colum

Lexington. After suffering for some
time she was taken to a Columbia h6s
pital for treatment, hut the doctors
found that an operation was necessary
to which s),r was unable to succomb.
The last da: f her life was a period
of intense - 'fering. All was done
for her that ould be expected of human
hands, but her time hud come
to go and the end pcacefullly come
and her soul returned to God who
gave it. Before she expired she sang
beautifully the hymns, "Asleep in Jesus."
"Till wc meet at Jesus' Feet"
"Abide With Me:" and several others
as she became weaker. As her nurse
and sister stood by her bod side: she
assured them, that she was prepared
and ready to go. Tho it is "with sorrow
we remember her suffering and
the slowly ebbing away of her precious

confidence that she is new "Safe in.

and admired by all whom she met.
She had a free willing heart and was
always bestowing gifts to others.
She is gone, but not forgotten. The vacant
choir can never be refilled, and
her gentle footsteps can never be
heard again. While the bereaved j
family mourns the lo^l of the youngest
and most favorite member we
commend them all to our heavenly i

nkwkeiiky colle(;k notes.
The prospect is bright for a large
attendance of new students at the
opening of college, Sept. 19tli. The
j establishment of a Students Army J
I Training- Corps unit at the College is:
| an important event in the affairs of;
| th.e College. Young men between the
| ages 17 a.nd 21 by entering college ;
j can obtain thorough preparation for
| military service a.nd at the same time
j the usual tcademio instruction. Our
'people are beginning to realize this
j and to understand its importance.
Prof. J. C. Kinard has returned
j from ' 'olumbia University. Under:
: his directon the Department of Xatur- ;
j al sciences will be enlarged and.
j strengthened next session. This is
done to meet the needs of our students
at this time.
Prof. C. \V. Riser and family will |
: move- into his house on the Campus
! this week. Dr. Hussey and family
j will probably reach Xewberry early
next week. It seems now that additions
to our teaching force will have *
to be secured. The Standing Commit
tee is considering this.
Dr. Bowers was pleased and encouraged
by his visit to Effingham
county. Georgia. He thinks we shall
i have more than the usual'number of
i students from that section.
Our friends throughout the state
say that they are going to "see us
I through." Tfre first cash contribution.
and it was no mean amount, for
next session to be used just for what
ever you need it" was handed to the
president last Thursday by Mr. Gus
