Carlton W Sawyer Accidentally Killed #r- ' . ^ V Lying on h:s back in a pool of blood ysrith a 20 gauge double barreled shotgun by his side, the body of Carlton W.; Sawyer, comptroller general of South Carolina, was found yesterday afternoon about 2:45 o'clock by J. C. Whittaker at 1329 Senate . Street, where Mr. Sawyer had made his home for the'last 20 years. Mr. Whittaker, who had been resting on a lounge across the hall from the room occupied by Mr. Sawyer, heard the report of a gun, followed by PG- a tbud, rushed across the hall and in. to the room, and found the body on the floor. He raised the head the head of Mr. Sawyer from the floor, called -I to him a time or two but received no sign of recognition, death apparently . having resulted almost instantaneouswith the firing of theg un. The ; .J "T * body was in front of a bureau on which was ,a bottle half filled with ma chine oil and some rags. On one of his'shoes was a stain as of oil. His coat and top shirt was off and he had evidently been cleaning the gun. The shot had entered the front of the throat and passed to the back of the neck. The shell was loaded with small shot No. 7 or 8. When the gun was unbreached, one barrel contained an exploded shell and the other a load rp~ ed shell. The body was later taken to McCormick's undertaking parlors where an inquest was held last night. The coroner's jury returned a verdict of death from accidental gunshot wound. The body was taken to Orangeburg where the funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock. Four sisters k;: survive; they are Mrs. W. C. Wolfe, Orangeburg; Mrs. B. B. Barton. Orangeburg; Mrs. 'S. H. Clark, Orangeburg and Miss Elizabeth Sawyer, Orangeburg. The three surviving broth ers arc A. B. Sawyer, Aniston, Ala.: Dr. W. I. Sawyer, Baltimore: S, O. Sawyer, Baltimore. Mr. Sawyer was 39 years old. Carlton Wilkes Sawyer was the son of Wilkes and Elizabeth Bamberg Saw His father, who had been a brave Confederate soldier, a member of Hagood's Bigade, died while Carlton Sawyer was very young. He was sent to Columbia by his guardian and received his primary education in the Colum'oa scroois. Afterwards he was sent to the Citadel, which he attended from 1895 to iS9s. He then took m . a position with the Bamberg Cotton Mills. Later was bookkeeper for the Nprris Conner Company of this city.In 1906 he was appointed license clerk by Comptroller General Jones, and February 27, 1915, was appointed comptroller general to succeed A. W. Jones, who resigned to acept the chair manship of the- tax commission. Mr. Sawyer was a candidate for elec tion in the primary to be held August 27. >? ? PROF. S. S. IoTXDLER HERE TOR SISTER'S BURIAL Prof. S. S. Lindler of Elliot, passed through Lexington Monday enroute home, after having attended the burial of his sister, Mrs. James Shealy, near Delmar. Prof. Lindler was for many years a resident of this county county, and is widely known, as an educator.
