It bores into the body of the tree just below the surface of the ground, j In many instances the trees are com pletely girdled which weakened con dition offers ideal conditions for the destructive work of the shot hole bor er. A simple and practical method of control for the peach tree borer is by mounding or thowing up dirt arj ound the trunks of the trees to a heighth of 10 or 12 inches. Time? The trees should be mound ed from the first to the 15th of July. trreparatoxy to muuuumg <x tuai-j of trunk wash should be applied by washing the trunk of the tree from the branches downward. This keeps the tree in a healthy conditon and re pels insects and diseases. Standard Trunk Wash: Lump lime 20 lbs Soap (whale oil home made or laundry) 31bs ? Tphur 4lbs Water 25gals Making the wash?Shave the soap finely and disolve in three gallons of hot water. Make a thin paste of sulphur and add to the soap solu tion and while the lime is slacking (in half barrel) the solution of soap and sulphur is poured over it and the whole quantity is diluted to 25 gallon^ which is a sufficient quantity to wash 200 to 300 trees 6 to 8 years old. This wash is very inexpensive and may be easily applied by the use of a paint brush. Method of Mounding?Pull or throw the earth, up around the base of the tree to a heighth of ten or 12 inches which when settled will be about 8 inches high. This may be done either by the use of a shovel or an ordinary hoe. The trees should be examined be fore mounding, and if there are any borers present they should be remov ed by taking a knife blade and cut ting out Pulling mound down? The mounds should be torn down from the 1st to the 15th of October and the trees examined for the borer. The pres ence of the borer will be noted by the exudation of gum, and may be easily removed with a small knife. After the trees have been worm ed a second coat of a trunk wash made as directed should be applied. It is very important that this mou and be pulled down otherwise it will be very detrimental to the growth of the trees as it furnishes an excellent place for the borer to work. J. W.
