FINE SORGHUM CANE, THIS
If bigger or better sorghum
cane ever grew in this section
anywhere than the patch of Mr.
Samuel H. Wingard, a progressive
farmer on Route 1, we have
never seen it. He has a patch
beside the road beyond his pretty
little home that- surpasses
anything the writer has ever
seen.
rrtt _ t p
ine cane is iuny ia ieei m^u
and is so large and thick that
you could not see a person ten
steps away, through the cane.
It is equally fine in width, and
an acre this size would make an
enormous yield. We expect to
get a "sample" of this syrup?
of the syrup made from that
very same patch of cane, if Sam
lets us know when he grinds it.
Mr. Wingard is a good farmer;
for the cane is not the only
good looking crops seen on his
place.
JUDGE TELLS WOMEN
WHY MEN LEAVE HOME.
According to Judge Stelk, of
Chicago, there are ten good
reasons why men leave home, j
Judge Stelk outlined them before
250 women in a church
meeting a few days ago, as fol-i
1
1UWJ5.
He lists mother-in-law and
father-in-law; money or lack of
money; young marriages; desire
to "sport around after marriage"
; lack of home training
on the part of young girls; improper
training, permitting
them to become loose in morals;
card parties and shopping
crazes; argument o.ver who is
boss, and bestowal of more attention
upon children than husbands.

Experience the Best Teacher...
It is generally admitted that
experience is the best teacher,
but should we not make use of
the experience of others as well
as our own? The experience of
a thousand persons is more to
be depended upon than that of
one individual. Many thousands
of persons have used
Chamberlain's Cough Remedy
for coughs and colds with the
best results, which shows it to
be a thoroughly reliable preparation
for those diseases. Try
it. It is prompt and effectual
and pleasant to take. For sale

FOUR NEGROES KILLED
BY LIGHTNING AT CAMP
During a heavy thunder
^ *1 _
storm Saturday aiternoon a
bolt of lightning struck a shed
at Camp Jackson, Columbia under
which thirteen negro laborers
were seeking shelter from
the rain, killing four outright
and wounding nine others some
of whom may die.
The killed were William McCottire,
of Georgetown; George
Kitt, Branchville; Matthew
Green, Eastover, and an uni-j
dentified negro. I
The peculiar feature of the'
tragedy was that there was no
sign of where the men had been ]
hit or where the shed was damaged.
Another most peculiar fea-i
ture, too, is the statement of one
of the survivors who claims
that he counted the number of
men under the shed and, finding
the "unlucky thirteen,"
there, started to leave as the
the bolt came, killing four and
injuring the others, among
whom was himself.
Passenger trains Nos. 3 and 4
between Columbia and Spartanburg
were discontinued on
Sunday.
