HieiiMosii, March .'JO-?The Petersburg
' Express" of this morning says that last uiujlit
tit ten o'clock, the cue my opened on our lines
near AppainaUox with a fearful artillery fire,
while a simultaneous movement was made on
tiio part i'| their mtaniry hi wie rear.
The masses of troops under Goi don received
their charges with coolness.
Up to 1*2 o'clock il.o fighting wascontinued
with great vigor ami persistency, l!ie eiteniy
making in ail live separate assaults, ail oi'
which were rcpulSed.
'I'll" enemy V loss must have been immense.
Thev rniiii' in swarms, supposed to No several
lines ni'liaitlit deep, ami the inference is irrcsifital
le that t!?? slaughter was fearful. Our
loss was comparatively small.
The jrall.wiirv of our juen was displayed in a
most gratifying in.iiiii<-r. Their conduct is the
theme of unusual prais?.
1 taring the entire light. which lasted two
hours, not a man was observed eoming to the
rear.
1\S., l.a m.?An officer jnst from the
front says that the enemy charged up to within
ten paces of the muzzles of our gnus; and that
they were literally mowed down; Our loss is
unprcecdinily small.

Petersburg. There is nothing official, hut reports
.tip to fivu o'clock arc dcenit-d reliable.?
They state that three furiousassau'ts were.repulsed
at half past two.
The enemy came up in overwhelming numbers
and drove JhislmVl Johnson's division a
mile and a half. The Confederates were then
reinforced which turned the tide of battle, and
we drove the cuemv with great -laughter to
and beyond their original position of the ltior
uing.
The ground is strewed with 'the dead and
dying. Seven In nlrcd prisoners aire reported
' sent to the rear.
The affair of last night, for a war of cannm
and musketry, (which lasted two hours,) exceeded
anything ever heard in this vicinity.
Ii turned out to-day that both bclligeroQts
conceived the idea that they were being charged
behind their works, when, in fact, neither
had left their entrenchments j heuce, the prodigal
expenditure of ammunition. It was oneof
the novel events of this remarkable war.
The loss was small on our side, and not supposed
to be large with the enemy.
Ail is (juiet in the front to-day.

From Mobile?the attack
Commenced.
MoriLe, March 28 ?There was heavy skirj
mishing at Spanish fort to-day, without athyjn
tage to the enemy. At four o'clock the fleet
took a part.
Our troops were in the best [of spijits and
everything looks encouraging. Our casualties
have been slight.
The enemy seemed inclined to make a regular
seige, as there lias been no general assaults.
All is quiet on this side.
Later from Mobile?the
Fighting Continued.
Mojjile, March 29.?The fighting continued
all day around the Spanish fort, with the"
advantage decidedly with us. The enemy's
loss is said to be severe. Ours is very slight.
One monitor was sunk this morning bv a shot
from the Spanish fort. The enemy's gunboats
commenced shelling the western shore at 'two
o'clock, but were driven oil' by Jubines' battery.
Forty-seven vessels, of all classes, are
in sight. Everything is encouraging.
From the North.

To What are We Drifting.
The demoralization of the #times continues.
Men who were strictly sober four years ago,
now get drunk without aDy regard to conscientious
scruples. Men who were formerly
considered paragons of honesty, can now steal
without a blink of the eye or a palpitation of
the heart?steal little things often without the
slightest justifiable pretext, through mere
wanton maliciousness. Men who would once
hare blushed at the conception of an obscene
thought or the utterence of a profane word can
now abandon themselves to the indulgence of
these thing9 with a gusio that eclipses the
most desperate instances of profanity and vulgarism
in former years. Avarice, lust, intemperance,
inhumanity, Sabbath dcsecratian, profanity,
pilfering, hold high carnival.
To what are wc drifting ? Life, property,
r.Jnoiiilitir nri> insefiiiro." Even the
house of God is often prostituted, and the
sacred right to worship God, is not secnre from
interruption. To What depths is man capable
of descending? Without the restraining grace;
of God and of law he would soon approximate.
the lowest fiend in the abominations that make;
up a hell. Verily, without reform we can
never expect the favor of Heavcg.? Columbus
Times.
The Sooth .vc.t yet Conquer?#).?The New
York "Tribune"" is not so sure that the "rebellion"
is put down". It says:
"Of course, we do not rejoice as-over assured
and accomplished triumph. We know that
| tliQrc remain armies to vanquish and the efforts
of desperation to baffle. It is possible that
the rebel hosts now mustering for their last
onset may deal us an unexpected and telling
Mow. Lee is to march northward into the free
States, says one rumor; he is going West, to
reclaim Kentucky and feed on iier undevastated
herds and pastures, says another* lie will elude
Grant and fall like a thunderbolt on Sherman,
says a third. It is impossible that, 'he may
vet be able to ooneentrafc one hundred thousand
men, two thirds of them veterans; and
such a force, well haudled, is never to be
dispised."

A Soloikh's Remark.?A'ladv dressed in
aa luxurious fabrics ae juter fluttered from a
fnirv form "before "f^r's deadly blast was
blown,'' with a sweeping trail behind on the
ground, of indefinite length, turned the coruor
at the Wayside Hospital yesterday, and as she
turned she cast a glance of anxious solicitude
bad: to see if the aforesaid trail was all U. K.
A crippled soldier, sitting at the corner enjoy'ing
t1,: sun, noticed the. movement and the
look, and with the vie'w of reassuring the lady,
exclaimed, "It's all right, inadame?the rest
of it is -coining down the street and will be
along shortly ! You can sail on?the dress r>
all scttiu'." It is useless to say that the lady
did sail on like a three-decker before a full
breeze.
