top newscaster, Edward R. Murrow (left) receives one of the 10

association from Dowdal H. Davis, chairman of the just-concluded
National Negro Newspaper week. The award was given to Murrow
as “an undeviating champion of those high principles of citizenship
and of true democracy” and for keeping "men constantly reminded
of their duty to decency and to destiny.” *'

’ ‘SATCHMO’ IS ‘WHALING’— Hard on the heels of his sensational opening at the Basin Street night
club in New York, veteran jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong appeared at an educational exhibit to
“serenade” a 75-ton whale, “Mrs. Harey,” currently attracting sightseers to Broadway. With the “beast”
on the scene, it was only natural that three lovely Harlem models would find their way into the pic
ture, and a pretty picture it is.
EQUALLING RECORD — Olympic champ Harrison Dillard (right),
of Celeveland, Ohio, equalled the meet record of 7.2 seconds in win
ning the K of -C games at Madison Square garden recently. Harrison,

BON VOYAGE — Record "King" Cole, who was recently
afforded the biggest birthday party in Harlem history, waves to
friends at New York’s International airport, before boarding a BOAC
plane for London and an engagement at the famed Palladium. Nat
