There is not at this time, (Friday
morning) a case of fever of any kind in
Beaufort, except Mr. Stearn who was
brought here sick from Port Royal.

Owing to the severe gale prevailing
outside for several days past, the pilot
boats one by oue came in and anchored
off the town making a fine display.of
bunting.
Mr. J. W. Collins has purchased a
residence in Dclard, Florida, and may at
no distant day mate that place his
home.
The fresh water auchorage of the monitor
fleet has been fixed upon at Sandy
Point, James River.
Any one wishing to open a store in Port
Royal, or rent a comfortable residence, will
find an advertisment in another column

Seven vessels, loaded with phosphate,
which were dctaiued in St Helena Sound
for over a week by the storui got away
Last Friday morning.
Some ot tue young colored men of this
town in organizing a new ba<-e bail club,
have called it the 'Tlaiuptou Nine" iu
honor of the Governor and to show their
appreciation of his high character as a
statesman and as the restorer of peace
and good order to the State.
The schooner J. I. Spencer, captain
(iaskill, arrived Saturday 17. days "from
JKockport Me., to Conant & Kmmons,
with 225'tons ice, 200 casks lime, 30,000
brick and 62 bales ha *.
The digging of phosphate "rock in our
waters has been stopped by the town authorities,
or rather they have forbidden
any more rock being landed on our
wharves. The unfortuate contractors are
stowing away their tools and will wait fo.better
times.
The State Treasurer has received the
following sums from the phosphate
companies in the way of royalty during
September. Cxtsaw mining company,
$15,003.00; Oak Point com pally,
$2,450.00; Boatmen's company $640.00;
Palmetto company, $37.00.
Governor Hampton has appointed

Brigade Infantry, with headquarters nt
Orangeburg. His command j com prises
the counties of Beaufort. Colleton, Bamwell,
Orangeburg, Aiken and lxtxiugton.
Mr. Chan. Kendall, of Palmetto Island,
engaged in a'spirited discussion of the

Justice went up on Friday and he'd an
inquest. The testimony showed that
the whole crew were intoxicated and
engaged in a free fight at the time Browu
was drowned and that no effort w s
made to rescue him. The jury returned
a verd'et that Brown ca:ne to his death
in ( '.tmequcnce of a blow or blows iufiictcd
upon him aud that he was either
killed aud thrown overboard* or thrown
overboard and drowned, and that Nicholas
Saudford, captain of the sl^op, Adam
Gadsden alias Mulligan and Fortune
Wigfall were the cause ot his death.
Saudford aud Wig fall were arrested and

The County Commissioners.

j Tuesday morning last. There was an
, entire absence of the hungry crowd of.

bids for the past indebtedness were open j

. bridges on Sister's Ferry road, one from
I John A. Tisou who offered to build them
j for $285, but he wrote that in order to ,

in order to obtain access to tire ones to be ,
built. George Steverson offered to build j
the bridges for $85 each, and also to
build the three others forf $75 each, pro- i

The treasurer reported collections from i
trial justices fines amounting to $89 and j
receipts from liquor licences $700. The
large amount reported from licences
is due to the fact that the commissioners j
notified dealers that quart licences would j
be issued at the rate of $50 per year, and !
many who were unab'e to pay the price '
of a retail licence at once came forward ;
and applied for the quart licences.

The German brig Nichalaus, 275 tons, !
bouudfrom Hamburg to Charleston, was'
wrecked on Hunting Island beach during
the storm yesterday. The captain and <
two men were washed overboard and lost.
The cargo consisted of salt, besides ?150
in bullion iu the Captaiu's chest.

The not unexpected but rather sudden
arrest of Robert Smalls this evening,
by a sheriff's deputy from Columbia
caused quite a commotion in town and
soon everybody was eager to liear the
truth in regard to it. It seems that
while mails was qnictly conversing a j
stranger came up and tapped him on the j
shoulder aud told him .he "wanted him.' i

the stranger informed him that lie must j
