Governor Hampton has appointed Mr. John Conant Jury Commissioner. The sauic gentleman was appointed to this office by tx Gov. Chamberlain, but lib pontics were not red hot enough for flu Senate and the nomination was rejected. . Remember the lecture by Bishop Lynch at the Sea Island Hotel next Sun day evening. We have so seldom a chance to hear n lecture by so eminent a man that the hall should be crowded. Mr. Campbell of the firm of Campbell. Wyllie & Co., of Charleston, arrived ai the Sea Island hotel on Sunday and on Tuesday, in company with U. A few days ago the Pacific Mining Company open-d up a large bed of phosphate rock- and decided to employ lheir hauds by the day instead of by the to ? a? formerly. The new terms were refused by the old hands who would not work fur oue dol ar a day, when under the old arrangement they were able to make about twice that sum. The company then employed new hands and the work was begun, when the old hands formed a Union j for the purpose of compelling the corn pa- | tiy to let the work out by the job. Effort- j were made by the Uuion to induce the | new bauds to join the organization, but j they declined and it was determined to j make them stop. 0:r Wednesday night ! of last week while the now hands were quietly asleep in their palmetto huts they i were fired upon from an ambush and four . of their number severely wounded. Five } of the attacking party were mobilized and tho sheriff went up on Friday and ef j fected their arrest and brought them be- ' fore Trial Justice Carle too, who bound them over to answer at the next term of court on the charge of assault with intent to kill, and riot. The prisoners are l>i k Young, Danl. Singleton* Francis (Jribbs Prince Young and Loudon Fe gtison. It is hoped that these men will be taught a lesson that will learn them that the practices of Molly Maguires will not be agreeable pastimes in the phosphate works of . South Carolina. ?a? All this in addition to a flourishing grove of five acres i of his own. Of the prosperity of Mr. Rich the Herald says: '"Capt. John Rich has oue of the best (if not the best), trardens in our village. The first week in April he dug a quantity of well developed Irish potatoes. Tomatoes measuring 51 inches 1 in circumference were on his vines, and j turnips from 10 to 16 inches, and still j growing. His garden is a sight to those J who hue been unaccustomed to witness : vegetables so far advanced as to be gath- I ! crcd for the tabic in the early part of ( ! April. A turnip taken from the ground ; 1 this week measured 27] inches in circum- j fercnce, and his corn has reached tlie length of nine feet. Tomatoes arc ripening rapidly, and all the luxuries usually enjoyed at the North in the garden seasju, are plentiful with him now." Editor oj the Tribune: Cannot something be done towards es tablishing a Beaufort branch of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals? The attention of strangers as wil is of residents is constantly directed to he shameful treatment of their beasts ly h; youthful ragamuffins who take pa> mongers and freight to add from the depot. No matter how sore their animals back the lumbering old vehicles arc driven reekle-sly up and down as the caprice ?f the two-legged brute suggests. Let this matter be agitated Mr. Editor in the j tame of Hr.MA.xiTv. We consider the suggestions of our cor respondent "Humanity'' as cxeoedingb. veil timed. The ill treatment of animals by persons coming from the conn try as well as in tin .own is notorious, and a branch of Mr. Henry Bergh's society and a determination o enforce the stringent rules against cru dtv to animals which arc so effective iti New York, would keep the agent of such a society thoroughly busy for awhile. Should it be deem?l advisable to form ? ? i % * m organization lor this purpose no Uouie circulars ami iuforuiation would be gladly furnished by the officers of the New York society. We have just received from the Publisher, a copy of a new Temperance Song and Chorus by the favorite author James (jr. Clark, entitled "nowhere to go." This is the late-t as it is one of Mr. Clark's popular songs?and conies most opportune just n->w when there is sueh an interest in the temperance cause. Mr. Clark's productions including "When the uiists have rolled awav," and the "Two Villages" aro known and sung throughout the land, their beautiful melodies, choice poetry, and rare adaptation ot music to the words rendering them universi! favorites. MaiieJ postpaid 0:1 receipt of 35 ctr. Address W. W. Whitney, Publisher, Toledo, Ohio. It will be a matter of interest fo all ou readers Jwho arc de-irons of adorniug their homes, to know that there has beeu incorpdfated in New York a Stock Company with a cash capital of a quarter of a million of dollars, for the manufacture o.
