'Tis bright ant! ilewy morning; springs Glad nature forth to meet the day; * Gaily the forest warbler sings, And fast right shadows lLe away. The mist rolls up the mountain side, In wavy folds of heavenly die, I The autumn flowers come forth i t pride, And beauty reigns o'er earth and sky. j Such was the hour which I may ne'er forget* . ..... , ! Nor can remember DUl with agony : IJ nv vivid is the scene before me yet, j Though year, one year, hath hoav iiv roli'd by, Since my ,'ovetl sister bowed her head to die. i. The rosy tints tliat lighted up the East, Were all unheeded by her languid eye, ? IJcr snowy hands' were folded oil iicr breast, And there sho lay like an o'ervvcaiied child at rest. i **" - " - .1..:..,, Knf i ney iciu mu kuu wiw iu^ uui nv trace Of the last mortal strife was visible, Save the deep paleness that o'erspread Ijerface, Aud clammy sweat which heavily and chill Hung on her bro.v; around her mouth was still Playing a radiant smile; oft have I seen Tit at fair one leading captive hearts at will, Vet ne'er when gayest in her word . and mien. Wore that sweet facv\ a smile so heavenly aud serene. It spoke of perfect peace and still tne calm, | Placid expression of that parting brow, Lives in my memory, and steals like bakn Over my wounded spirit: it hath power To nerve the soul for conflict, 'tis a <!nnpp Of priceless value, and when storms arise, And clouds o'er my horizon darkly lower, I hiisk of one whose home is in Iho skies. Vet 'us ours to know, j That with the dwellers in that pcacclul land, We, purified from earth's defilements low, I May stand complete at last, where joys perrenial flow. i Then life let us meet with hearts serene and strong. The woes winch cluster round our earthly lot; Well may we bear the varied ills that throng Our pathway here, if sure to reach the spot Where grief and suffering shall be all forget? Let faith look upward with a trustful eye ; in that celestial vision sees she not, A beauty all known beneath the sky, A radiant glory crown'd v. itn immortality. September J, 183?. ggggg"1 MMU n mm ANECDOTE OF A POOR NEGRO. The Rev. (j. C. 8>nith, at an anniversary meeting of ii?e British and Foreign Sea- ' . man's and Soldiers' Friend Society, related the following anecdote of a poor negro on tlx : const of Africa. It wy$ communicated to Mr. Smith, by a gentleman who cal led oa him with a donation ot' ?\!0 fur the society. A pcor negro, who foil some concern about his soul, applied to his pr.'crsf, who gave liini various directions, w hich were a!. . unavailing. He was so distressed in Ins jnind, thai he went wondering about from place to place, without meeting with any : thing to comfort him. On day as he was s:L , ting in a solitary manner on the beach some Knglish sailors came ashore to get water;; As they were rolling the cash along, one of them heard the moaning of the poor nc- j gro, and going up to him sasJ,14 llalloo, shipmate, what's the matter with you ?M j The negro began to tell Ins tale of woe, in broken language, but was hastily interrupted by the sailor exclaiming, -Ob, j see what's the mailtrwit!:you. you mast go to England and there you will lie:;r of the Christian's (io'J that paid the debt." These words were spoken in a careless, thoughtlcc-s manner, but they made an impression on the inind ofthe negro, and be determined to procecvT^o England. Ho travelled a great many miles until he came :o an English settlement, where he got leave to work his passage over in a ship that was Iyinglherc.. .During the voyage, he would IVc ijiicnt!}* ap-j pr?:icli one sailor and another. and say with -great simplicity, in a piaiimve tone, ideas': \?i f- u " w!?erp ^'hrv!.'? dat pay de u'obt ?" The seamen, who it ap. j pears were all irreligious, on.y laughed at j p him, and concluded that lie was mad. The j ship arrived nt London, and the negro was ; g put ashore at Wnpping- Having no money to ! J receive, he wandered from street to street, J and whenever he could catch a single pas- 1 [ scngcr he would stop and say, in the mos.. I melancholy manner, ' Please, you tell poor j > black man, where Christian's Go 1 dat pay :,1 de debt ?" Some told him to go about his business, some gave him money, and oth. j ers supposing him to he deranged, passed j o:i , but he saw no one to answer Ids qeus- ' tion. In this manner he con'inued to s*roll | about as devoid of comfort in England, as 1 r 7 las own land; and frequently would he . s'eai down some by.place, and give vent j to his soul in accents l.ko these ; 41 Ah ! j j me no hear of Christian God dat pay de I debt ; me walk, walk, day, day, but no ! . hear white man tell me in Africa, go to!1 England, but me no friend ; me go back, j J medi'j here.'* He saw some people ontlie ; | the .Sabbath going into a large house which : hccoucluded was the tcmpleofthechristian's 11 God ; he followed them, lie heaid a sermon, j 1 < ' ?-- I ... A gentleman accidentally over-hcard liim one day while he was complaining to himself of his unsuecesful inquiry after the Chris ian>'s Cod. j lie spoke to him and ('heeled Inni logo to such a place that evening, atid there he would hear of the Chiistinn's God. He! t wen', and beard a sermon by that gen- j demon on the suretyship oI Christ in which he d?'scrib"d sin us a debt, and Christ as paying it, and the price he paid, and that lie was ascended up to I leaver, and had sent hiin the preacher to say to p.I!, " Come 1 unto me, all yet that labor." Ate. Long before he came to the close of die sermon, j the spirit of God had been pleased ;o touch the heart cf the poor negro, and :o enlighten his mind ; hes arted up in the pew, but wi hont making a noise, and in a whispering tone, was heard to say, by the persons near him, while iic clasped his hands togeth< r, nno the tears ran down sable bis cheeks, 1, " Me liave found him, me have found him ' j the Christian's God dut pay do debl !! ' After :iio service the minister bad some further oonvers.rion with him, and was rejoiced at the state of his mind. An opnnrturirv was afterwards taken to send him back to Africa. Alaslj thought I, how inucit is very of.cn lost by i that "too life L ?sl evening I went down to a steam-j boat to see a gentleman who had promised ; to carry a letter to a friend for mo, and just ; got theic in time to hand it to him, as the j the boat. I am glad I was not too In.e. j, thought f, when a gentleman ran past me crying out, "hold oti, ho'd on.*'?but the captain shook his head and ciic J "it is too late.' Then the poor man looked very sad, bit his lip stamped Ins fee, but a!! would do no good, it was "too late.51 IV r- , haps he had friends on board, perhaps val- j uabic baggage ; perhaps lie w shed to go in that boat, that he might see some sick friend he fore he died, but alas, nc was too late.
