LATEST FROM FLORIDA.
13y the steam packet George Washington,
Oapt. Knock, from Gircy's Ferry via Jacksonville,
we have received the Jacksonville Courier
of 7'iiursday last. Extracts from it wiil
be found subjoined.
In addition, we learn from passengers in the ,
George Washington, that an express from
Gen. Jesup, arrived at Jacksonville on Thursday
last with dates of the 7th, but nothing
defini'c w<:s gleaned f.otn him. One of the
indefinite reports was, that neither Philip or
Oseola had come in, nor was Abram in the
camp when the Express left.
Gen. Jesup, it is said, advises the l itia. ns
not to return to their homes until ho announces
that it would bo sale, and, to prevent collisions
in regard to property of the whites in the pussession
of the Indians, which would probably
lead to renewed hostilities. Gen. J. it is reported,
will not permit any citizen to approach
within 13 miles of his Encampment.
The intelligence from Tomoka, is far from
encouraging.

From the best information received at this
place, we think the Indians are mostly retiring
from the Alachua section, where they have
hitherto so often shown themselves
l,t. Col.. Mills, in a letter to the Editor, di'ei
Fort Gilliland, April 3th, IS!?, says thai he
has been actively engaged?that lie has been
almost constantly on horseback with strong
detachments scouring the country, and had
found no Indians. He 'expresses the hope
that all have retired l<? tleir limits south of
Hillsborough. Col. Mills will probably remain
active in the field during the time our troops
u-e continued in the service.
In addition to the above, we learn that the
army hive marched with the Indians who
have surrendered, upon Tampa Bay.
By the arrival of gentlemen from St. Am.
gustino, we learn that (ion. llernanue/, with
upwards of '-100 men, is at Tomoka. lie went
there some days ago, and he had encamped
near the ruins of Judge Dunham's buddings.
Indian tires have been seen in that section,
and a few Indians. Some were ilrod on by a
sentinel. One of the soldiers wandering about
three hundred yards from the encampment or
pickets, was shot, scalped, and his head was ;
cut off. The steamer Florida which transported
those troops from St. Augustine to that
place, is still there and detained for want of
wood.
Report say that there are Indians in considerable
force in that neighborhood?and Hon.
Hernandez is prevented by them from cutting
wood lor the Florida?and that therefore he
sent to Augustine for it. &c. We doubt if
there are Indians in that secttion now.

of Indians strolling over the country regardksj
of the authority of thcchiets. They
should be driven cut, and I have to request

lit. Col. Crane.
There is 110 disposition on the part of the
great body of the Indians to renew hostilities;
and they will, I am sure, faithfully fu'fil their
engagements, if the inhabitants of the Territory
be prudent; but any attempt to seize
their negroes or oilier property, would be followed
bv an instant resort to arms. 1 have

which was announced some time
ago, as having passed the House of Representatives,
has at length, by passing the .Senate
also, and receiving the Governor's signu- '
ture, became a law; and the gigantic young
State which has adopted it, may now be expected.
forthwith to stride on faster than ever,
to that vanward place among the co-states to
which she is obviously destined by her extent,
the fertility of her sod, the advantages of h r
position, and the well directed energies of her
people.

are filled with this important Act. The editor
says:
"Since the passage of the Rill," [it was approved
on the tibth Feb.] " the iand otlice here
has been literally crowded with persons desirousto
enter and occupy the public land. We
ha\e 110 doubt the passage of the biilhas already
increased the vaiue of land in tlic State
more than 100 per cent.; and every day is adding
to its value. We have the utmost confidence

The Governor of Mississippi, lias called an

The Convention to revise the Constitution

Amsterdam, named Welland, a German by
birth, has invented a machine which performs
the task of sewing a garment as well as it can
be done by the hand. The King of Holland
has just presented him with one hundred ducats,
but the tailors have vowed vengeance
