FAITH AND WORKS.
ON THE STATEMENT OP PAUL AND THAT OF
JAMES CONCERNING FAITH
Much jHirplexiry lias often been felt, in
contemplating the two passage, Rom. i;i :
12S, Tlit;refor?s we conclude, tliat a man is
justified bv fai:b widiout the deeds of the
law, and James ii: "21, Ye see, then, how
that hy works a man is jus.iiied, and nut by
faith only.
To view those citations through a proper
medium, a due regard must be paid to the
context and to tlie various considerations in
which the subject is involved.
It is well known that the npos !o Paul was
a learned Hebrew of the Pharisean sect,
and that, while he sus'ained this connexion,
Ik; was a high-toned legalist, and a persecutor
of the Christian (kith. 11c no sooner
became a convert to this faith, than he
changed his views, ids associates, Ids manner
of I: fa, and earnest :y endeavored to establish
that belief, for tlie destruc.ion of
which he iiaJ employed his mightiest efforts.
it,* i>io w !?<>!(,ii'd in tlifi dolus.
i IH>} k/ivimvM ? ...
io:i from which lie, by (lie grace ol C.Iod, had
emerged. In his endeavors to remove this
O
(Inclusion, and exhibit the nature of evangelical
faith, he travelled extensively; he wrote
fourteen epistles to dilfcrent churches and
individuals ; he performed the most perilous
missions in E irope and Asia, and, willing,
not only to he bound, but to die lor the sake
of the Lord Jesus, lie cheerfully sealed his
testimony with his blood. Evangelical faith
was, iu his view, of the highest importance,
lie unfolds its nature, discourses upon its
value, and shows that without faith.it is impossible
to please God. In his address to
the Hebrews, he defines it as it is expressed
ID the English version, " the substance of
tnings hoped for, the evidence of things not
seenor, as it might be more clearly expressed,
confidence in respect to things hoped
tor, firm belief in respect to things not
seen. It is thai by which we receive the
atonement and lay hold 0:1 the hope set before
us.
In Gal. v: 5, G, Paul gives us to sec
what sort of faithjic means, where he treats
of it us connected with justification. " We,"
says he, " thro' the Spirit, wait for the hope
of righteousness by faith. Eor in Jesus
Chris: neither circumcision availeth any i
tning, nor uncircumcis:on, but luito wnicu
worketh by love." It is, then, according
to the teaching of Paul himself, the faith
which worketh by love, and this only that
iivailcth any thing. To understand fully
his statement in the passage under consideration,
(Rom. iii: 28) we must commence
with the 23d verse, in which he says, "For
all have sinned ;"all have transgressed the
law, the rule of duty, (whatever that rule
may have been.) under which they were
placed. None, therefore, can plead the
deeds of the law, or their works, as the
ground of their justification. " Forall have
sinned, and come short of the glory of God;"
and if any are justified, they must be "justified
freely by his grace, through the redemption
that is in Christ Jesus, whom God I
I a !? set forth to be a propitiation, through,
faith in his blood ?that is, most clearly, j
through such a faith as relies, not on their
own merit, but solely on divine grace,
through Christ and him crucified ; and, at
the same time, worketh by love. 41 Where (
is boasting, then ? It is excluded. By j
what law (or principle?) Of works? Nay.
but by the law of faith. Wherefore we
coocdude, that a ;nan is justified by faith,
without the deeds of the law." As much j
as to say, Therefore we conclude, that without,
or independently of the deeds of the I
law, (that is, gratuitously, or through grace,)
a man is justified ; it being understood, as j
a matter of course, that the faith spoken of,
is that which looks to the blood of Christ,
and " worketh by love."
Now, let us turn to the apostie James.
Soon after the crucifixion ol our Lord, this
apostle, it is probable, had a Iead;ng part i:i
the cure of the church at Jerusalem. From
the year 31, tiil his martyrdom, in the year
l);J, his influence over the Christian church
was extensive and salutary. At the time (
when he wrote the epistle which bears bis !
name, and, especially that part of it to which i
lite present discussion relates, he had in I
view the deluded professors of religion who'
substitute a more profession of faith, a form i
of godliness, for its reality and power, and j
thus wrest the Scripture to their own des- j
truetion. This will be manifest if wo con- !
suit tite whole paragraph. " What doth it
profit, m; brethren, tho' a man say he hath
ftlilti, and h*vc not works? Can faith save i
him? If a brother or sister be naked, and j
destitute of daily food, and one of you sav
unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed
/fc" * - r . . . 4
and tilled, notwunsiancung ye give mem uoi
those things which arc needful to the body,
what d jth it profit ? Even so faith, if it hath
not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a
man may say, Thou hast faith and I have
works. Show me thy faith without thy
works, and I will show thee my faith by my
works. Thou believest there is one God ;
thou does: well; the devils also believe and
tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man,
that faith without works is dead ? Was not
Abraham, our father, .justified by works,
when he had offered up Isrmc his son, upon
the altar ? Soest thou how faith wrought with
his works, and by works was faith made
perfect ? And the Scripture was fulfilled
which saith, Abraham believed God, and it
was imputed unto him for righteousness ;
and he was called the friend of God. Ye
see, then, how that by works (as when Abraham's
faith wrought with his works) a
man is justified, and not by faith only (that
is, by a mere unproductive dead faith, that
yields no fruit of righteousness;) for as the
body without the spirit is dead,so faith without
works is dead also."
It must now be manifest tiiat Paul speaks
of that genuine faith which " worketh by
love James, of a merely speculative fuith,
or a spurious one that is dead. Paul speaks
of deeds of the law, or works, viewed as
claiming justification on the ground of per.
fection and merit. James speaks of works,
viewed as the fruit of a living faith, and as
the evidence of character. In a word, Pan
o^drcsscsa less""* 1* s.-rb on thei:
! own merit, for salvation ; James, to such as I
rely on faith that does not prompt to a holy j
j lite, hut turns the grace of God into iascivi- j
j ousncss.
As, therefore, the words faith and works j
' are use.] by one npostie in a different sense
i Ironi ilmt in which they are by the other, i
j there is, clearly, no contradiction in the state- }
! ments. J'otli Paul ami James commend j
| nud eutorce that faitii which works by love. I
| From their statements it is evident that a j
j spurious or dead faith is an index of spiritual j
i death ; that, however high and fair its pre- |
j tensions may he, it is adapted only to decoy, |
! to captivate the unwary, and lead them on j
| to endless ruin ; that genuine taith looks
humbly and gratefully to the Lamb of God ; j
| that it works by Iovo ; that it is productive t
! of good fruits ; that it has a lodgment in the j
j heart, and influences it to regard nothing i
which comes in competition with the dccis- I
'??? ????' fnmmnnds of (rod. These state- I
| meats, rightly understood, concur with the
1 whole current of Scripture, and teach us
; most impressively, that it is no light thing
to 1)0 a true believer in Jesus Christ; that its i
value can be estimated only in view of its !
| eternal consequences.
Here the solemn interrogation naturally
. addresses itself to every conscience, Is my
| faith that which workcth hy love?" Does J
i it produce the proper elFect in my heart and j
; my life ? Will it bear the scrutiny of an j
omniscient Clod? Fair professions and
speculative theology are, in these decisions,
tofuo importance. * Wherefore, let him
that thinketh he standoth, take heed lest lie
! fii!'."
Vro:n the Sunday School Journal.
Tun Thug Religion.?The doctrine !
| that if men are sinccrc, they are therefore j
j innocent, is a lavorite delusion. Highway{
men have been immoillizcd by iiistory and
| fiction for their noble generosity and sense
of honor. And, on the same principle, it is j
| not uncommon to hear good hearts ascribed j
! to men of liie^iost corrupt lives, because j
tney have some appablo tracts. Under ]
| this class come those who ask for credit as ! 1
respecters of religion. They mean well j
and do as well as they conveniently can, but i j
thev must not be expected to be strict or ex- j
j act in their piety. They must be permitted ]
j a pretty free indulgence, in consideration ]
| of the honor they condescend to render to | J
j religionasan abstraction. They would be J
sorry to be called profane. j *
There is a fraternity of murderers in India
called Thugs, who go out in companies, 1"
in the guise of travellers, and joining them- i
selves to merchants and other persons on j
their journeys, allure them to retired spots,
murder them, and take their property. In
thp record of the'investigations which the j .
j British government has made into this sub- J j
I ject, it appears that the Thugs are a rc-Ii- !
I gious sect. The following is part of the j j
lesimony of two of the witnesses : | J
"The father (a noted Thug) used to drink j J
very hard, and in his fi:s of intoxication he j J
j used to neglect his prayers and his days of | j
I fast. All days were the same to him. Ilis j
lad, Sumshena, (also a Tnttg.) was always '
sober and religiously disposed, and separa '
ted from his father, living with his uncle, j
Dondee, (another Thug.) who was a very ;
| worthy and good man."
' Captain Slccman says of them that 'no (
men observed more strictly in domestic life
all that is enjoned by their priests, or de- j
manded by their respective casts; nor j
do any men cultivate with more care the ;
esteem of their neighbours, or court with j
more assiduity the good, will of all cons'ituted j
iocal authorities. In short, to men who do I i
not know them, the princpal members off
these associations will always appear to be
among the most amiable, must respectable,
| and most intelligent members of the lower,
| and some times the middle and higher
| classes of native society."
