Marine Hospitals.?Among the appropriations made at the last session of Congress was one of 75,000 to build a marine hospital in N. Orleans; one of ?10,000, for the erection ot a marine hospital in Mobile; and otic ot 815,000 for the purchase of scites on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, and on Lake Erie, lor the erection of hospitals for sick boatmen and others navigating these rivers. Wm. II. Roane has been elected to the IT. S. Senate by the Legislature of Virginia, in place of Judge Parker. Major Wm. IL Lee lately died in Paris ot the prevalent influenza. Indian Portrait (*adcry.? liie King 0I England lately sent for the agent now in that country, obtaining subscribers for this work, and after spending an hour in examining the specimen No. in possession of the agent put his name to the subscription list. fFrom the Philadelphia Exchvnge Boohs A - - i A letter from Porto Kico, Mat lias oceu twliibited to us, contains an extract from the St. Johns, P. R. Gazette of 26th January, giving an account of a piratical sloop cruizing among the smaller windward Islands; she is represented as being a fast sailer, and manned with 70 men, all of color. The account also states, she had already committed many outrages on American vessels in sight of St. Martins and St. Barts. The Governor of Porto Rico, immediately 011 receiving information, despatched the man of war brig General Laborde in pursuit of her. Maryland,?The Reform Bill, as amended by the Senate of Maryland, having for its object the alteration of the Constitution of that State, has passed the I louse 59 to 14, and lias become a law. A public meeting was held at Mobile on the 14th inst. to devise measures against Irambling, and to relieve the city of the gamblers who now infest it. Stage Accident.?We learn that the Southern stage when 17 miles on this side of Favotteville, yesterday morning, run against a stump, by which the driver was thrown from liisseat; the horses ran and broke the stage to pieces. There were four passengers, none of whom were seriously hurt.?_Y. C. Standard. ' ? ri School tor J^nmnecTs. c* IF South Carolina expects to carry through her great works ami to sustain them?if she expects to keep even pace with the rest of the Union in the course of improvement, she must not be dependent on other States ror the science which such efforts require. Our own young men must he educated for the purpose. The Military School at West Point cannot supply onetenth of the Engineers winch will be required ; and besides, the education there is so much of it military, that at least two years are lost to those who intend to confine themselves to cir 'l Engineering. Other States have found it necessary to erect Schools for this purpose; Kentucky has a School for Engineers at Georgetown : Ohio at - ' M-wlImn In Cincinnati, anu inuiuia ? <, .unuiou... ... . , young men arc taught French, drawing, mathe. matics, and engineering, and in two years coinplcte their course; so that with two subsequent years in the field on a canal, rail road, or other improvement, under a skilful Engineer, the practical as well as theoretical part of tlio science is well acquired. One who is well advanced in mathematics and French, can be prepared for the field in one year?the two years afterwards employed in some work, will cost the student nothing but his clothes, as his services will entitle him to his support and expenses there. It will thus be seen that this course of education will be attended with less expense than any other professional one; and r.o other promises as great remuneration as this. The time for South C'arolini to act in this matter is most propitious Extensive works are about being undertaken in this and the adjoining States, where a wide field for improvement in this science will be open, and where skill and industry will be amply rewarded. These considerations have suggested the following plan. The Itice Creek Springs arc now unoccupied.?There arc good buildings there to accommodate the teachers, a steward, and at least sixty students. The situation is central to the State?is retired, and as healthy as any in the United States. The place contains about three hundred acres,?which, with all tlio buildings, can be purchased for ?2,81)0, and ?1,200 more will put it in repair and supply the necessary apparatus for the School. Four thousand dollars, therefore, must be raised, and it is proposed to do this in shares of two hundred dollars Thn association will then consist of twen ty gentlemen, under whose direction the School will be. They will appoint the principal teachcr, prescribe rules for the governmen of the institution, and tix the rates of tuitiontand board. Tho Principal may be permitted to engage his own Assistants, and rely on the fees of tuition for his remuneration. The benefit to the contributors who purchase tho pLce will be the profe~eneo they will have to name students for admission into the School. It is expected that at least forty students will enter their names us soon as it is known that the plan is perfected, und com. pctcnt teachers engaged. Dut to ascertain what number of students may be depended on, gentlemen wishing to send arc requested to drop a line to one of the undersigned as soon as possible, as it is desirable that the School should be opened by the 1st of May.
