A resolution lias been adopted calling on
the Secretary of the Treasury for a statement
of the amount of moneys received lor public
lands in each month of 1330, and the amount
expended in transporting specie to and from
land offices, with the losses, if any, sustained
thereby;?and ono calling on the Secretary
of State for all papers shewing the present
relations ol the U. States and Texas.
A bill has been reported by the Land Committee
providing that no bills shall be received
in payment of public lands issued by banks
k which henceforth emit bills less than 85 ;
A nor after Dec. 1839, of banks which shall
P thenceforth issue bills less than 810. A bill
to pay, now, out of the Treasury, the indemnities
due under the French and Neapolitan
treaties was rejected, 19 to 23.
A message was received from the President
in obedience to a resolution of the Senate,
transmitting the correspondence of the President
and Santa Ana. It consists of only a
letter from Santa Ana to the President, and
the President's reply. Santa Ana expresses
the opinion that the difference between Mexico
and Texas ought to be terminated by "political
negotiation," and solicits the friendly interference
of the President in favor of executing
the "convention" between Santa Ana
and the Cabinet of Texas for his release,and of
terminating the war. The President's answer
refers to the published declaration of the
Mexican authorities, that they would regard
. no treaty or engagement made by Santa Ana]
whilst a prisoner, and to the neutral position
of the United States between the parties,
which rendered it impossible for him to inter-]
fere as requested. He howevei says that it]
Mexico should express a willingness to avail!
herself of the good offices of the U. S. Govern J
ment, nothing could afford him more pleasurtl
than to devote his best services to the businessl
He also states that the letter of General Housi
ton, commander of the Texan army, should bcl
made the basis of an interview with the Mexil
can minister. I
The message and documents were ordoroil
to be printed. While the subject was up Mr!
Preston urged the propriety and justice of ouil
immediately recognizing the independence oJ
p Texas. Mr. Calhoun in the course of a few
remarks said, the earlier the better.
The bill to prohibit the sale of public lands,
except to actual settlers, and in small quantities,
having been formerly so amended as to
graduate the price of such lands as had beenl

In the House of Representatives, a resolution
has been adopted instructing the military
committee to inquire into the expediency of
appointing a Board of officers to cxamineinto
the improvement in fire arms made by Cochran,
? Hal!, Colt, and Baron Ilackett. The resolution
ou the subject ofgranting public lands to
literary institutions in the different States was
referred to the Committee of the whole on the
state of the Union. The House after debate
refused to cv/nmii the bill for the admission of
Michigan. The bill was then advocated at
I length by Mr. Thomas, and opposed by Mr.
A Hardin on the ground that the convention in
I the Territory, which acceded to the terms proW
jxised by Congress, was revolutionary. A
F bill has passed the second reading to appoint
[ a committee at each session who shall inquire
J into the distance by the nearest inaii route by
land, from the residence of each member to
the seat of government, and providing that this
distance shall-be that for which the members ]
^ shall be entitled to mileage. j

no greater sum than $350,000 to bo appropriated
annually, unless a future legislature shall
otherwise direct; the Governor to appoint an

estimate of the probable cost, and appoint assistants,
surveyors, and attendants; $00,000
appropriated for salaries and expenses in making
the survey; the Governor, if he shall
deem the work practicable, at a reasonable
expense, to appoint a superintendant; $200,000
arc appropriated for this work, for the year
1337; when charters are obtained for branch
rail roads, the State is subscribe to one fourth of
the amount, not to exceed $200,000 for one
branch.

the year 1333, thtre weie lost on the coast of

820 lives.

Airw Vessels.?We find from the shipping
list, that 957 vessels were built last year in the
United States, and that the tonnage was 118,338,
viz:?98 ships; 94 brigs; 49? schooners:
180 sloops; 88 steam boats.?Total, 957.

says:? .Mercantile men, making their calculation
upon the .nets of Congress, now have
j every reason to believe, that the Tariff will not
. be touched, and that no new surplus distribution
law will be passed. This is our sincere
I opinion, founded upon personal knowled jr; of
j the opinions of members of Congress, and of the
! condition ef parties in Washington. Even
; if Mr. Cambrelcng's Bill should piss the
; House, we feel quite sure it would he stopped
; in t!ie Senate. It is not the intention of Mr.
: Van Huron's friends, tiiough they have the majority

bable, that the duty on Coal may be removed.

Man ELMCK, aged about twenty-five years;
a blacksmith by trade ; uncomonlv large and fine
looking in his person, with a broad open face;
about six feet in height, and has the scar of a
burn on one of his hands, and also a similar scar
on one of his thighs. Ellick lias been traced as
far as Camden, whither he went on the stage
from Columbia, and is undoubtedly endeavouring
to make his way to the city of Baltimore, from
whence lie originally came, and with some one

It is supposed tiiat lie baa free papers, or is ma. |

son, and will perhaps pass under tho name of i

for this act of treachery to his master, having!

the apprehension and lodgement of Ellick in any J
jail out of this State where I may find him, and !
for the detection of the rillaiu who was accessary
to his escape. Or if taken within the State
and delivered to me at Columbia, or if lodged in I
