Northern tariff men, and probably many of the
anti-tariff members of the South will unite
\vith them.
Trial of White for burning the V. S. Treasury.?The
Jury in this case, after a confinement
of several days, were discharged without
agreeing upon a verdict. The prisoner is to
have a new trial.
The following is the substance of the evidence.
He confessed that he had been to
Washington city and destroyed the Treasury;
and said that he cleared enougli to pay his expenses.
He said that he entered by false keys,
and that he knew enough of chemistry to set fire
which would bum when lie pleased. But the
witness who testified to these confessions was
a man of infidel principles and bad morals. A
witness overheard the prisoner say to Harvey
White his brother, that he must not tell witness
about the burning of the Treasury.
Another witness, a female, overheard the prisoner
say to her husband, who is now in the

enough by burning the Treasury, had it not
been for the bad management of his brother
llarvev. Another witness heard the prisoner
say, that some keys in his hand were them
which done the business at Washington. The
prisoner when arrested, asked 44 what for," and
without an allusion being made to the burning
of the Treasury by any one else, said, that he
coold prove he was I'd miles from Washing,
ton on the night the Treasury was burnt.

Tor a slip by the express mail containing
the following letter originally published in tl\e
Natchez Courier, we are indebted to the New
Orleans Bulletin. It explains the object of
Santa Ana's visit to Washington, and accounts
for his release.
To the Editor of the Natchez Daily Courier.
Sir?The Mexican General Santa Ana and
his friend and aid-de-camp Col. Almonte have
been released from their captivity in Texas,
and passed up the river a few days ago on
their way to the city of Washington. They
are escorted on behalf of the Texian government
by Col. Hockley, Inspector General of
the army, Col. Bee, the late Secretary of the
Treasury, and Captain Patton. I accompanied
them from this place to Vicksburg, and
the views which have induced the visit of Santa
Ana to our capitol have been placed in my
possession with the request that I should

In view of a speedy and pacific adjustment
of the sanguinary war which lias existed between
Mexico and Texas,the captive general
solicited permission from the Texian Government
to throw himself upon the protection of
the United States, and claim the interposition
of the mediatory offices of their Chief Magistrate.
IIe proposed to acknowledge the Republic
of Texas as an independent sovereign nation?or
to agree to the incorporation of her
territory into the North American Union, if
the other parties interested should so determine.
Being a prisoner of war?and the Mexican
Government having expressly declared
that it would hold no negotiation with Texas
tlirough General Santa Ana while hv. so remained
in duresse, it became necessary, if ins
authority and influence were to ho made available
at all, that he should at once he placed in
a different attitude, in which he might be free
and untrammeled, unbiassed by any disparaging
circumstanscs, but according to his unquestioned
legal right?that he should, in Uct,
be restored to the full and complete possession
of all his lawful authority & power as President

ment of Texas was indispensably requisite?
and under tlie peculiar circumstances which
^xist in, connexion with his captivity, it was
deemed advisable that the pacificatory oificos
should bo invoked-ofsome neutral power, friendly
to both of the belligerent parties, and impartial
between them. General Santa Ana
therefore proposed to visit Washington, and
solicit the mediation of the President ot the
United States, and his proposal was acceded
to by the Executive of Texas, who believed
that nothing could possibly be gained by detaining
him longer. On the 1st of March next
the term of his Presidentship will expire, after
which time he would be utterly valueless as a
prisoner.
Th* people of Texas are anxious to terminate
their war. They wish to live at peace
with Mexico. They desire most heartily to
establish their government, and if uossible to
annex themselves to our Union. They couW
hardly hope to attain their object while they
held the chief of their enerav in the bonds of
inmrisonraent. Thev have therefore, in aspir

it of magnanimity deserving of all praise, vol*
untarily surrendered him to his liberty, on the
pledge of his word and honor that the war
shall be terminated, that peace shall be restored,
that the relations of amity and friendship
shall be cultivated and cherished. To detain
him could avail them nothing?to release
him afforded^ at least, the prospect of advantage.
If their hope shall be realized, the blessings
of a prosperous peace will fall upon them
?if disappointed, the execrations of the civilized
world will be visited upon their enemy,
and him whom they have conquered they can
conquer again.

nearly opposite the American Theatre, on
Sunday night at 9 o'clock, which destroyed
buildings Xos. 68, 70, 72, 74 and 76. The
printing offices of the Standard, occupying
No. 72, and the Observer, in No. 70. were
both entirely destroyed?no part of the materials
