Propectus " '* I OF THE 4 W AMERICAN* LITERARY COMPANY. 9 THE object ofthis Company is toelerati tftcp 1 general standard of literature in the TJu ited M States, by introducing into common use, an 1 improved uniform series of elementary books, und fl simulating native talent, by securing to authors die publisher's a rofit on other than school books. ^1 The plan is. the organization of a company I .villi sufficient capital to publish all books wrjttea I >y native authors, which may be approved by a H lonnnitteo of publication, at the risR of tbo com- , 1 wny, who shall pay over to the author sH.profU I >n the sales, after deducting the printer's chai- J p?s and incidental expenses. . ' 1 It is proposed to manufacture the paper used n printing, and thus to save the expense of dryng it for market, putting it into bundles, trans. ortationto market, commission, interest and [uaranties, equal at least to twenty per cent. A greater saving can be made by the employ, neut ofboys in composition, printing and hinting. This, with the profits on periodicals, re- . -*?-l U?a1/o 111 oonn wn r\ ha 'wins, iiuu triuiIlCUUUjr uvvna, n m ovuui\s iv itiu tockholders a good dividend. By requiring each clerk, foreman, papermaker, 3'imeyman, proof-reader, and all others connect, d with the Company, to hold a certain amount rstock proportioned to their salary, which, when : has not been paid in advance, will be liquidated y a sinking fund out of t.'ieir earnings, and held ubject to be assigned to the successor of each, pon a condition that such successor shall be alawed to pay for it by a deduction from bis earnags, cacli person attached to the company be- ( omcs a stockholder, and, to the extent of bis lock, interested in the success of the institution. Miis feature will be rigidly enforced, and in case ny one in the employment of the Company shall or any cause, be dismissed or leave its service, is slock will be assigned to his successor. Agencies will be established in the large cities, rhero the Company's books can always be had t the wholesale prices. Booksellers, and coun. rv merchants who sell books, now pay a profit o the paper maker, another to the printer, and third to the publishers. Those who subscribe took in this Company will receive book? at their ost, rating the printing at the New York prices, Dt!:< amount of the stock so subscribed ; it berig understood that the dividend on their stock, o the amount of six per cent, per annum only, hall he charged as interest and that all dividend .hove six per cent, shall be paid to snch stockholIcrs. The Compnny thus guarantee to bookselers a dividend of G per cent, per annum on the .mount of their stock, and the paper maker's proft, the printer's profit, and the publisher's profit, >ver and beyond their own profit as booksellers. The advantage to the Company is, that all the ilockholders will be interested in getting work or the Company's otiice, and that each stocklolder will always give a preference to theCumnny's paper and the Company's books ovc those >f other makers and publishers. Such an cr angement with the booksellers will enable the Company, by means of a circular addressed to heir correspondents1, enclosing their report ofthe :ommittcc of publication, to be ."?d, and thus irotcct them aga'nst all loss by ts *ertaining in advance if a proposed work can b -old ; for if it cannot be sold, the Company w not print it. Pima il-ft iniorpsts of authors, ablishcrs and jooksellcrs will be reconciled, by rating a community in which the rights of eu. h will be feecured, the public benefitted by t .0 introduction of a nr 'form series of improved school books, and the ^oatli protected against the introduction of any matter tending in the most remote degree to assail our institutions and prosperity. And when we t ike into consideration the fact was that there arc now held against the prejudices of tho world ?that a society with more than five hundred auxiliary associations spread over many of the States of this L'nion, with immense sums for tho gratuitous distiibution of tracts and pamphlets, have declared universal emancipation, and remembcr the influence which early impressions have on the matured mind, all must see the importance of guarding against the admission into our elementary books of any matter which may mislead the feelings or judgment. Inasmuch as the sale of school books 13 much greater, and the value and profit depends much more on the publisher, the Company will divide llic profit with the author or compiler on all element iry books. This arrangement will place all authors and compilers on the same footing ; and inasmuch as the company will have no interest in the copy right beyond a contract for the exclusive right to publish until a better or improved book is produced by some other author, the company will be always inviting, and in Let offering a premium for better and improved books. As it now is, every author encounters the competition of publishers who have the copy-rights of rival books. This Company will lie an impartial urn. pire, ready to place each now competitor on the same footing as the most favored party. Its object being to publish the best book, and the profit being the same o:i either, the preference will always be, and Directors will be held in Columbia, South Carolina, on the 30th of November. In the mean lime subscriptions will be received, and the certificates of stock issued when the Company is organized. The objects to be accomplished by this Company are such that it is hoped there will lie no want of funds; and we especially rely ?i.A ? .i-Ion of fhr> TVlprrr.-inh tn forward their yju 1111; ibuuv<^ v. ~ - ~-~e*? *- ? n dines.
