years of age, it already measures some

Thoso annuals aru said to continue grow
ing until fifty or sixty yearn old; and
ofthe length and riae to which they some
times attain, history relates account* that
almost stagger credibility. The kinds meet
celebrated lor their prodigious sines and
power, are natives of the burning regions
of Africa. The story, related from Llvy,
by Valerius Maximui, of the immense
Merpent who disputed with Kegulus the
pawiago of the river Bagdara, in Africa,
and which was at la?t only overcome, after
having destroyed may soldiers, by the bat
tering nuns employed in demolishing for
tresses, i* considered by naturalists as no
altogether a fable. It w thought that the
account, stripped of the exaggerations with
which a luxuriant fancy would be apt to
accompany the rotation of such an event, is
a true description of an enormous Hoa Con
strictor, the siae and length of which was
probably not much misstated, if the ac
counts given of similar animals, by travel
lers in our own times, are to be believed.
The true hoe sro without poisonous
fengs. They destroy their prey by the
means of muscular strength alone. They
require food but once in about three months,
and, in their nativo country, whon this
i>eriod arrive*, thoy glido into some deep
thicket, whence they dart upon the unluc
ky animal that chances to pass the place of
their ambuscsdo, and winding their coils
aruund it, thoy nut only extinguish its life,
but crush its nones, and compress it into a
Hliapeless mas*. In this State, they man
ago to swallow it entire, and when they
have completed their monstrous meal, they
retire again into the covert, where they
remain for tome time in an almost torpid
state*. Before the period of hunger again
arrives, they shed tfieirskins, while which
process is going on they lie in a torpid
state, and on noon a* it is finished, again
awake, and seek out some new covert
where there is a likolihoodof prey. The
lloa exhibited in this city devours, at one
of its meals, s largo sized rabbit; but, in
their native Ktate, and arrived at full
strength, they are able toconsumo tho lar
gest kind <?f animals, Which they destroy
by their pressure only. An account which
we have lieen perming states, that " the
elephant, tho niinocero*. the hippopota
mus, and the lion, an* tho only kinds that
can resi*t them with success. The stag,
the leopard/and even tho buffalo, entan
gled onco within the coil* of the boa, must
mil easy victims to its voracity. Tho hoe
ere, among serpents, what tho elephant
and lion are among quadrupeds; like the
eleptiant, they Hurpuss the serpent race by
their siae ; and like tlie lion, excel them in
tneir address, tfieir courage, and their
force. Confident in their powers, they
attack their prey openly ; oppose their
str ngtli to the resistance of their enemy
with anient intrepidity, and. when they
conquer, it isby their manifest bodily vigor
over that of their opponent."
An snsconda, another serpent of the boa
genus, wss likewise shown at this exhibi
tion at Masonic Hall; but it is now torpid
from the process which it is undergoing of
changing its skin, and has been consequent
ly withdrawn for a few days from exhibi
tion. When the shedding shall be comple
ted, an opportunity will probably be afford
ed to the lAiblic of seeing this animal destroy
and swallow its quarterly meal.

The American Cokmiaation Society hat
eleven 8Ut? Auxiliaries. The Legisla
tures of eleven states have publicly ex
pressed their approbation of ita plans, and
of these eleven, six are slave states. Ten
states have recommended it to the patron
sgo of the Federal Government, and of
these, Ave are slave states. One slave
state hat* made an annual appropriation to
aid the Society. Among the passengers,
sent out the last vearby the Society, were
88 manumitted staves. At the close of tlio
year a passage was sought for 900 mow,
snd 2000 were ready in July loot to bo sent
from North Carolina. The agent of the
State Society in Kentucky says, "lam
perfectly astonished at the ardor, with
which all men of all ranka enter into the
plans of the Society. In going round to re
ceive members, I was informed by many
individuals, that they were perfectly ready
to surrender their negree at any time the
Society mightbe prepared to receive them

should have a candle, but should go to bed
without one, and in respect to tho rum
alone waa willing to yield the film.
He probably will say I left his bed and
board*?! assure the public he had nothing
for a bed but a board / and that is no better
than lying-out when I was on the point of
lying-in. No longer ago than yesterday
he promised to buy mo a soft straw bed to
lie upon, but 1 found his promises all straw,
or rather found him all promise and no
straw, and all about the lying on ? soft
straw bed, was a hard lie on hie foul tongue;
since his ashes must make strong lie, when
he is condemned to be hung, and give the
devil hia due, the time must be near at
hand. 1 advise him to sell his carcass in
anticipation to some soap boiler.
He may say he will p;iy no debts of my
contracting?4u> is a false loon for his in
sinuation if be doea; I have always enlarg
ed and ttveiled every debt I owed, aa much
as in iuv power; I was nover known to
diminish or contract one in my life ; and
with this not onoof my creditors will charge

In conclusion, like a dutiful wife, 1 have
left no stonn unturned to phase my hus
band ; but 1 havov Anally, borne with him
till it ia past endurance, and as there is a
hole even in the holy lock of wedlock, and
the legislature have a key to it, 1 am deter
mined to bo divorced.
