great rise in the value of timber. At this
season last year pioc and oak, which form
the principal part of the cargoes, sold, the
first at 2Jd to 3id, nnd the latter at lOd a

Those who have contractcd for the deliv
ry of timber in the home market at the
usual average price must of coarsc suffer
great losses, while oh the other hand those
who bring their timber to the Quebcc mar
ket from the upper country, and have not
entered into contracts, but calculated upon
the average prices must make full a hun
dred per cent, above what they looked for.
These gains will chiefly full to the Lower
nnd Upper Canada dcaleriand lumber mcr
'Jurat*.
During alt this the home market, where
i!;c ultimate payments must he obtained,
r fully as low, if not lower than laat
year, and from the great imports from
irom the Baltic will likely continue so. Yet
vessels here tnu*t obtain cargocs, and the
prlccs support tbelr increased rates. The
market will be made ba,*<j, inferior timber
shipped, prices finally hurt to some extent,
nod timber ships not finding cargoes early
next spring will arrive late or nyt be ao nu
