tion of disinterestedness and patriotism were
required to purify our local politics, it is
now. We see the existing parties divided
by selfishness rather than principle. We
see the strongest efforts made by ono party
\o retain, ana the other to obtain the coun
ty offices. We soe men nominated for le
gislators. not for the purpose of enacting
wise and nocessary law*?but to procure
bank charters, and the incorporation of op
pressive monopolies; not to devise some plan
for the relief ol'the prostrated and suffering
operatives, hut for the purpose of urging on
a new Executive, the appointment of cer
tain men, to the exclusion of all others: and
finally, we see integrity and talents, which
should, in all virtuous communities, bo the
only passports to popular fovor, excluded
from office by tho intrigues of family com
pacts and selfish combinations.
We seriously ask you, follow citizens,
whether you wish such a deplorable state
of things to continue?whether you are
still wilting to bo the victims of unfeeling
aristocrats and law-supported monopolists
?and remain ife white the rights and
privileges guaranteed by our constitutions,
are, one by one, wrested from Us, and bar
tered away for the aggrandisement of po
litical sim ulator*. Pause, era it be too
late! It was while Samson slept that his
power waa taken from him; he awoko to
slavery and death! It is only by unceas
ing watchfulness over our liberties that we
can avert a like catamity.
In assuming and exercising, tlicrefore,
the rights and privileges which are our
birpi-nght, wo wish not to interfere with
Uie rights of others: but in claiming an
oqual participation in all tho advantages
derivable from our happy form of govern-!
