that the party assembled nt the dinner tnble

Several contradictions are palpable In this ?
speech. The orator declare* it to be far
from his wish to continue or revive the agi- .
tations with which the late *'embittered,
context" wns accompanied} and he describes
that contest as endctl, for good or for evil, ,
and invokes repose for the nation. Yet he
straightway launches into the most invidious
and irrltnting topics:?the utter unfitness of
General Jackson for the duties of Chief Ma
gistrate; thedungers of preference for mili
tary men; hi* owusupposed personal wrongs;
his absolute want of confidence, and bis read
iness to engage in a new struggle. In- one I
breath, Mr. Clay tells us?"Patriotism en- I
joins as a duty that while General Jackson Is
in the exalted station of Chief Magistrate,
lie should be treated with decomm;"but
the spesker bad just accused him of ?* wan
ton, unprovoked and unatoncd injustice, in
flicted l*i the double pur{iosc of gratifying
private resentment and promoting personal
ambition;" and of having undertaken the
Presidentship with no qualification other
than military triumphs. We cannot well
imagine charges more ntmrobrious than
these, uttcri-d in the midst of a strain
of ominous reference to the future, a
mounting altogether to the sentence ot the
poet:

ever reject the opinion which Mr. Cl/y ad
vances, thflt " the elevation of General
Jackson is the result exclusively of admira
tion und gratitude for military service, with
out regard to indispensable civil qualifica
tions." It is unjust and derogatory to the
American people, who arc grateful indeed
for military service, but annex much less
Importance, nnd commonly shew much less
favor, to the military, than to the civil char- i
nctcr. The majority r.f the voters gave I
their suffrages under tnc impression that he ;
possessed the talents, energy, mid honesty, (
which, assisted by the special experience j
and attainments of otlurs, would form an
adequate President. They felt, it is true, |
as became them, gratitude for hi* military
services, an operative sentiment to which i
was added another of much forcc?we mean !
sympathy for htm in the warfare of slander, ?
of which he seemed to be the object for the !
purpose ol prostrating him in their estimation
We notice here the fact* of the cast, ami do
not mean to urgue the question whether the
Iieoplc may not have committed an error of
udgement, overrated the man, and thought
I too lightly of positive ch ? ftialificutions, pe
culiar training and habits, for their Chief
Magistrate. That question remains to be
| determined by the the "official acts" of
General Jackson, interpreted " in a spirit of
candour," nnd iiltitnatelv judged by results.
We can never acquiesce in the assertion,
from what source soever it may come, that
the Amctirnn people nr3.so ignorant or reck- ?
lesss of the genius and efficacy of their insti- j
tutions.and of their highest interests, so I riv- .
oloui or precipitate, wildly enlhuiiastic or
blindly whimsical, an to raise any individual
to the office of President, merely from 14 ad
miration nnd gratitude for military service,
without regard to Indispensable civil qualifi
cation-."

to their intelligence, their principles and J
situation, to cite allusively and chiding!)- the ;
violent revolutions which have occurred in '

of reasoning, in the eases. It would have
been quite as logical to argue, or chide, in
the same sense, when General Washington
was prefer ted for the station of President.?

of their civil and republican institutions.?
