w?It was the morning siy>

had objected to converso with me on the sub

for the capitol, that Mr. Buchanan came to
visit me, and When the conversation I have
atated took place. The answer retained hat [
already been published, and need not here be
repeated.
To be that anproarhed by A- gentleman i
of Mr. Buchtnatrthlgh character and stand
ing, with an apology proffered at the tfane
for what heweetibout to remark to mo??ooe |
who, as 1 understood, had always, to that
moment, bean unfamiliar and friendly terfhs
whh Mr. Clay, assuring mo that ou certain
terms Mid pandit ions being assented to on my |
part, then, "by an uniau of MrTciaV tad h(s
friends, they would put an end to tlifc presi
dential contest h) one hour," what other con
? elusion or inferpce waa to be made, than
that bespoke by authority, either of Mr. Clay
himself or some of hi* confidential friends.
The character of Mr. Buchanan, with me,
forbids the idea that Jtox. w*? acting on hit i
own responsibility, or that, under any cir
cumstance*, he could have been induced to ,
propose an urrangement, unless possessed of
yatlifoctory assurances, that, if accepted, 4t
would be carried fully into cfTcct. A wenk
Imlnd would seldom or ever lie thus disposed
to act, ap intelligent one never.
Under all the vlrcumstanves appearing at
that time, I Hid not resist the impression that
Mr. Buchanan had approached me on th?;
cautiously submitted proposition of some au
thorise-! person ;and, therefore, In giving lum
my answer, did request him " to say to Mr.
.Cl:iy and his friends*" what that answer had
? been Whether the communication as made
to Mr. Clay and hit friends, I know lu.ti this,
though, X do know, that while the opinions
L and course of Mr. Clay a? to the election,
.were hut matter of conjecture with many at
and before thin time, very shortly after this
c-onvcrsetkm took place, his, tutd nit friend's
'?pinions became for with matter of certainty
and general knowledge. 8tUI I have not

? uot what my letter itself contains. What I
1 have stated, are the facts of n conversation
between myself and a member of Congress j
? of high "respectability. The conclusion and
'inference from that oonversation-^the time

So I have though t,'and so I still think} and

may have posisibly done Mr. Clay injustice.

of my country, through the acts of a promi

should greatly prefer that any Inference 11
have made may turn odt to be ill founded, j
Mr. Clay dteintH his great satifoction,
that this matter hat at last been brought to
light, and to publle consideration. He feels
that a specific accusation by a res
ponsible accuser lint at length appeared.'
To thlt a passing notice bduc.
It mutt be recollected, that lit consequence I
nf a letter from Mr, George Kremer in Janu-:
ary, 1835, an inquiry was set on font in Con-j

On this memorable occasion, nf guilt Im

Without documents, and unacquainted
with the number of Mr. Clay's friends, in the

it It obvious, that the influence he possessed

It be presumed, under such a state of gene

I One further remark and I .un done, with
a hope that, on this siibjcct, I may not be un-1

newspaper*. In saying what t have, all the
circumstances considered, I have felt it was
due to n?y*?lf nnd to the public. My wish
would have been, to avohr having any thing
to say or do In this matter, from an apprehen
sion well conceived, that persons will not be
wanting who may charge, whatever is done,
to a desire to affect others, and benefit my
self. My own feelings, though, arc of higher
importance and value to me.tnan the opinion
of those who impose censure whciv it is
believed not to be deserved. 1 have been
actuated by ho such design, nor governed by
any thch cdtisldc ration. The origin?the

an Intelligent people, I have been content to
rely for secuftty on their decision; against the
countless assaults and slandets which so re

without seeking to present myself m my own
