fession to try the effect of the extract of
black pepper in Intermittent fever, prepar
ed by (^getting, in a glass vessel,' one ounce
of the nepper, In twelve ounccs of distilcd
water, for thirty-six hours, in a water bath,
and evaporating the hquoi to the consistence
bf an extract. This remedy was tried on
nine individual*, affected with intermittunt
fever of different types, in do*c% of four,
eight, ten or twelve grains dissolved in water
in tome cases, given in the form of pills in
others, by Dr. Clock of Trent) and the cf*>
fccts surpassed his warmest expectation*.
From these experiments, the Doctor con-,
dudes that the extract of pepper is not only
one of the best succedaneums, for the bark,
but that H b actually very preferable to it, i
on several accounts. 1st. It never produces I
disturbance of the stomach or bowels. 2nd. '
Because it never failed in producing its c.u- j
I rative effect, 3rd. Those who were cured I
: did not in any one instance, cxpcriencc a re* |
i lapse. 4th. It' promotes a icguiar alvine ;
' discharge as well as the excretions of urine j
and sweat. 5th. None of those who were ,
< cured experienced that sensation of languor :

was a Boston lad. His father, John Single
too Copely, was the same whose portraits
are now exhibiting in the atheneum gallery '
among the rare and valued efforts of the '
pencil, which have been collected tor the,
purpose, in Boston and its vicinity. The
painter was celebrated in New-England be- i
fore the revolution; but leaving the country
about that time, he exercised his talents w ith j
XI success, in a far more extensive <
re. He died in l?ondon about twelve fl
years since, and left a name which will go 1
down to posterity with those of West mid
Reynolds. He also, we believe, was u na- j
tive of /oston. He married i? daughter of
