Jlfitcheti.?-An In dictment in We Baltimore city court, ?M found against the travener for a violation of the Uw of 1777, prescribing a penalty of indicting persona from marrying within the degree* of affinity as therein expressed?the traveller having married hit wife'* daughter ?the parties were both residents of the Mate?they left the state, went to Pennayl van!*, there joined In wedlock, and return ed again to Baltimore. At they were citi xens belonging to the stato at the time of ' the contract, which* though stipulated to !>c performed ivhllc la Baltimore* was not solemnised, until they reached Pennsylva nia, and beiug there consummated, was ft nnlly completed by again coming to the state, which circumstance* dearly brought the ofTeiye within the provisions of tho act of assembly to which we have alluded. Th! trial, from its novelty, having produced con siderable fxcitemciit In the public mind, we have been induced to make a report of it. The connscl for the accuscd contended that the Baltimore city oourt hud no jurisdic tion over the case, iutd that they could not he amenable to n Maryland tribunal for a crime committed beyond the limit* of the state. The case was well argued and every | circumstance that could possibly tend to Ihcneftt the traverser was ubly enforced? I but the charge was too strongly sustained to I be shaken by any eloquence however Irre sistible. The eourt overruled the objections to the jurisdiction, fcc.?.ind pronounced agsinst the offender tho penalty annexed to his transgression. In the Cour..v Court of Anno Arundel, John Lowtrv anil James Hughes, found guil ty of stealing sheep fr*..n Capt. Barber's farm, were each sentenced two years to the I'enctentlary, forty days of which to be in the solitary "cells. .Yew Surgical O/irrothn.?There is <n the middle of each tooth, aa every anatomist known, a little cavitx, in which tliu fine branches of nerve*, passing through the ntotit of the teeth, 'arc expanded. Thin ex pansion of nervous matter is the Meat of gen nation in the teeth; nud when, by caries or ileeny of the enamel, it ia exposed to the influence of external agencies, the patient^ generally obliged, on account of the violence of the pain, to have the whole tooth pulled out. An ingenious surgeon from America, lately settled In London, has satisfactorily shown, that the diseased part of the tootit includiug the cavity ithove described, may I he cut olt with the greatest tasu and celeri ty, and that the sound root or roots may be allowed to remain hi theif sockets. This mode of procedure has been show a und ex plained to the most scientific surgeons of lliiirtuwn, who linve without exception, ex pressed their conviction of Us utility./ The operation has been tierformed on more thtui 200 mcmhen of tne profession, and they have invariably declared that It occasioned no pain, und that it could scarcely befell; as tlieii' own ccttlfleateH show. The instru ments used for this purpose arc very simple ;1 they are a few plain forcep*. right angled ana straight, with cutting ndge*, like the| common suivlcal bone fort-ens, but those edges are made accurately to fit the neck* of the teeth, ami only the neck*; to that, however decay* d a t?#oth maybe, the for ceps may be safely and easily applied, with-1 nut any risk of brcaking'th* tooth. 1 laving been thus carefully applied on the neck of a tooth, the edges of the forrejMi should be held |mndlel to the edge of the gain, and should be made to press it down a little, h| order to get the neck, about a line bt low the uuixl height of the gum; the handles of the forceps arc then pressed gradually but ftrmly together, and In a moment the-upper part of tlie tooth simps ofT, including the ca vity containing the expansion of the nerve, MM thus In an instant, permanently relieves -till pnin. The ud vantage* of this operation are?'1st. It is painless und instantaneously performed. 3d. The surface, of the sound Mump remaining in the Jaw, presents a Arm base for mastication; or for the Axing of an artificial tooth. 3d. What Is' of greatest moment, the stump or stumps left in the jaw, aflord a firm support to the adjoining teeth, and without which support, the alveolar process corresponding to the pnrt before occupied by the diseased tooth, and a part of the interstice structure of the jaw, become absorbed; the adjoining teeth in a few ycats become loose, and ultimately pre maturely fall out, an dutly experience shows. Mr. Fay has, for his improvement in this branch of surgery, and for other forceps for the perpendicular extraction of teeth, when extraction muy be absolutely required, re ceived the large silver medal from the Hocic ty of Arts; and the instruments, with en f;raving?, will be published in the next vo ume of the transactions of the soviet)-. [London fin/icr. Jixtratl of a It Her from Si. Jago dc Culm, dated Xr'/,r. 31. 1826. We were visited on the morning of (he 1Mb Inst, between 3 and \ o'clook, with one of the mo*t awful earthquakes that has been felt here for fifty vests past, at which time nearly one half ?>? the town was destroyed. There were two shocks, the second more severe than the first, and the duration of each was al?out one minute. The noise re sembled the tumbling of heavy loaded wh Sons dragged over a paved archway, and mshed with a tremendous explosion like the simultaneous discharge of an immense number of cannon. The confusion was un exampled?men, women and children sud denly leaving their !>cdx and running in eve ry direction; some with little clathutg on, many entirely naked. The most pitiful cHet and shrieks were heard ttrom these terrified peoplr, who were to tK ?ccn running to the ?pi ?^ Cathedral and offering up the hurried jk votionsof the moment j some were stuplfied with fear, some crossing and beating them selves with great seal; others calling loudly on .the priests to assist them with their pravers and holy water; Indeed it seemed that most of them thought of and asked the aid of their Creator ?r the firot thnelu their lives. It was generally supposed from the weather being so close and tultiy, that a repetition of. the shock would take place. I'll is however did not occur, and the priests h#vc attributed this special Providence to the efficacy of their prayer*. After thel agitation had in ?me measure subsided* targe tubs and bathing reseda jr err filled with water, which being blcded by the priests, the superstitious part of the .people immediately got into the cootecruted ele ment'and remained for nearly ah hour up to their necks in holy water, supposing that it would protect them from another shock,? But ft # houses were thrown down, no Uvea lost and the damage was comparatively tri*' 1 fling. Numbers of large ft?b wereobserved lumping undplavlng about the vestwiin the hurbuur, just before the shock. ?^m * The following humorous, article wc copy from the Athens (Geo.)
