The farmers . of upper /Colleton
have proven that tobacco vis a vary
profitable crop, and la .oBfo th^t we
can substitute tot cotton when the
boll weevil has put cotton growing
to the bad.ftome^men last year
<msde from 1300 to $500 gross per
acre. .This puts them peers of our
best truckers, for seldom do nota-
toes ever.bring that much perScre.
Your county agent In conversing
with quite a number of ipen has de^
cfded that this crop should be plant
ed largely bext year. ’ There are
quite A number of ohT tobacco barns
near Walterboro that should i>e put
into use. Jf enough men will plant
tobacco to total 500 acres we could
have a market started right ip Wal
terboro. . Our soil here is fust as

M counties tBiffcave profited by grow
ing the weed.
I>t us have some' discuss|on on
this sobject. Yolmcounty agent un
derstands tobacco culture and cur
ing and Would be glad to. give his
assistance in this matter. If we are
to plant, now is the time- to begin
preparation. Houses must be built
and the tobacco beds must he plant

The Press and Standard has been
favored recently with a great deal
of qdyertlsing, which has caused
much reading to be crowded out.
Not oply have we been ' forced to
omit reading matter, but much ad
vertising had to be left out^ We re
gret that this has been necessary,
and ordinarily, we should have been
able to issue additional pages, but
on account of the fact that we have
not had sufficient force, we have not
been able to do this. We have done
well to get out eight pages.
This explanation *4*—iflade for the
reason that many news items have
not been published, both of happen
ings, and thofce sent in. We trust
that this will not be necessary much
longer^and that even if the rush of
advertising keeps up. and we would
not have it otherwise, that we jHiall
be able to Issue additional pages.
Another thing, the War Industries
Board required up to a few dayt*
ago that newspapers should con
serve paper in every way and not
Issue addiional pages.
BOLL WKKVIL MTILL MPHKADING
Clem.<oa,College, Dec. 6.—The cot
ton boll weevil continues to spread
over South.Oarolina territory. The
fal| spread will be stopped by the
first killing frost, which is much
inter this year than Inst. The pres
ent line runs as follows;
Through Beech Island^and Haw
thorne in Aiken- county; north of
Weathersbee and Yale in . Barnwell
county; threngh Goran to Edisto
Rivey at CoUeton-Uamberg county
line; down the Edisto river to Weeks
and crossing the Edisto river near
Sullivan’s Ferry; through Berry Hill
to Stono Inlet.
The present boll weevil infested
territory of South Carolina includes
therefore, Beaufort, Jasper, Barn
well,’Colleion, most of Bamberg and
part of' Aikeh and Charleston coun
ties. Weevils were found last week
near St. George in Dorchester coun
ty. - .
The weevil damage has been con
siderably greater in Jasper. Hamp
ton and Beaufort than was expected
this fali. The injury has .been only
to the top crop.'..however. In Beau
fort county weevils ai> numerous in
every cotton field.
The cotton planters in the above
countiefl may expect tjiiite a large
amount of boll weevil injury in 191k
according to the present indications.
It Is necessary for each and every
farmer to begin fall work for the
boll weevil control as soon as pos
sible.. Get rid of all cbtton stalks by
grazing, turning under, or burning.
The laud to be planted in cotton
should be turned this fall to better
enable the planter to start the next
cotton crop early. ,

WHEN DREAMS COME TRYK
Perhaps there is not a man or
woman who reads this who has not
wished at some time In his or her
life that there would come a time
when dreams come true. Just-now
we have beep dreaming of a time
when we would like to see some
dreamt come true. * The officers and
workers in the Colleton County Fair
association, of which the editor is
one, during the past ten days have
been longing for the time when
their dreams of co-ufperation and as
sistance in public enterprises which
stand for the upbuilding of the town
and'the county would come true. To
stage a fair properly is not a one
man’s job. To make it a success
there must he united effort on the
part of every man, woman and child
old enough to take a part. This has
not been the case in the recent fair
Instead there has been but llttl.e
When approached to render assiv
tance or co-operation almost invar
iably tile officers of the association
have been met with refusals atul re
buffs, to say nothing x>l indifference.
This has made a work, which ordl
narily should be most pleasant hard
to perfbrm. It has been almost suf
ficient to mak« the. most optimistic
feel like throwing up their hands
>
and quitting. What success comes
to the fair this year will come in
spite of these knocks and not ^be-
cause of assistance rendered except
by • very few. The knockers club
has been in session constantly.
But all this will be different when
our dreams come true.. The future
of Colleton county will also be dif
ferent when our dreams come true.
YOU can help make them come thie.
Will you?
