A. news article from Columbia
given publicity last week states that
Governor Manning has listed ap*
proxiuiately 2.000,000 acres of.land
in several of the cbijnUet of tbe
State, the purpose beinj^’to cut this
up and sell or lease it to returned
soldiers for making houies thereon-
Franklin Kt Lane, secretary of the
Interior, Will visit Columbia, within
d few days to confer with Governor
Manning and'others relative to this
project.
No definite policy is announced a« .
yet for handling this land, but thel
Idea seems to be good. ■ If the Gov
ernment will undertake to uhder-
write. the efforts of deserving sol
diers who wish to establish homes,
and will provide them with uieans>
for making a success of their’un
dertakings. it may mean a big thing
for many a man now serving his
country. It is a big proposition,
however* and will necessitate a care
fully worked out plan.
It will be well to look at this prop
osition from many viewpoints. If
the soldier, who has been useful in
developing the industries, and no
less so the faVms now in operation*
ig to be set up independently for
himself. If. will mean that there will
be a continued scarcity of labor for
these industries, and further de
velopment of the farms now in op
eration will be retarded. If the
plans are carefully prepared and the
soldiers themselves desire it. w<*
shall welcome the • intervention of
the government as a settling agency,
especially If ft will undertake »hc
drainage of our low lauds; and the
building of good roads.
