"I have'been Beijing Chamberlain’s Tablets for about two years and heard such good reports from my eustomer* that I concluded to give them a trial myself, and can tty onently interrupted by bursts of ap plause from his andience. He told us among other things that South Carolina is better organised in war work than any other state la " t he union, and also that In the th’-eo loan drives which have been con ducted the expense of the cam paigns has been less in ours than tn pny of fhe states. This ia a matter for congratulation, since it shows that our people are spending them selves their time and their energies freely for this great cause. Gover nor Manning reminded us that th>* w*v is costing us at the rate, of $t.- 000.004 an hour or $4ff.000;'0©0 ‘ * day, and that a large portion of thA ' money must cotite from thy people In me form of bonds. The govern ment experts estimate that the ex pense of carrying on the war next year will be $24,000,000,000. Of this amount about $$,000.01)0.000 will come from a direct tax. We were reminded that all we hold mAat dear is at stake—even the Chris tlanity upon which our civilization is based. We cannot and we mUst not fail; hence our work will h*v>> to be more intensive and more ex tensive even than before. Our watch words will be “Co-operation ‘ and Harmony.” It is estimated that there were 17.000,000 people who bought bonds in the last issue, leaving $3.- 000.000 who d!d not buy. W’e must reach the ones who did not buy be fore and also give the 17 ooo.OOO another opportunity to help. At Governor Manning said. “•«ome of h* w)U have to wear clothe* that have been dved and darned If we are to buy bonds again: yet "tlix bonds must bf bought, snd we should feel it a prtVjlege to make my sac- • rlflce to aid our government ip that time of Its sorest need." , Every address of the conference was both interesting and inpp^ing. Mr, Van Meter’s Ouggestions were exceedingly practical and helpful, and the atories of the organization of Charleston’ county and Riehland county, leave some splendid ideas to the worker* from other sections. .We! whre impressed with tit* fact that the negroes have been helping with war work jn almost every coun- ' ty. and that the workers expect very generous stfbscHotlons .from them in this drive. They are showing a purer strain of patriotism than w* had thought'them capably of, and we reloi-e ip the kuowledge that f h*y «:•< ;.vHling to labor and sacri- X that I do not believe*there, is an other preparation of the kind equal! 11100 racy to them.” writes O.
