The Middle
(The Picker)
y/ \ '*
The coneumer wants to pay a low
price for cheat. *
The fanner wants to get a high
price for cattle.
The packer stands between these
conflicting demands, and finds it im-
posuble to completely satisfy both.
* • S' • v
The packer has no control over the
prices of live stock or meat, and the
most that can be expected of him it
that he keep the difference between
the two as low as possible. He does
this successfully by converting animals
into meat and distributing the meat
at a minimum of expense, and at a
profit too snail to be noticeable in the
farmer’s returns for live stock or in the
meat bill of the consumer.

The net profit was $1.29 per head, or

By what other method can the dif
ference between cattle prices and beef
prices be made smaller, nnd how can
the conflicting demand:, of producer
and consumer be better satisfied ?

Smoaks on the road to Branehville.
One cannot see ifhis farm without

telling what 0 makes happiness:

*-A little farm well tilletl.

And a little barn well filled.”

I. J. should be happy for he has
all three Everything on the place
is in apple pie order, the house well
appointed, the vard neatly fencer;
with prdty walks of flowers, and,
climbing vines, gives a cool and in
viting appearance. Whole-souled
hospitality and perfect ease of man
ner and comfortable circumstance.-,
are marks of prosperity.
We s«»on found ourselves at the
hog lot. looking at the perfect beau
ty purchased by May at the
Orangeburg sale - a Poland China
sow. Her litter consisted of three
sow pigs, and they are true to the
type They are Just six weeks old
and one of them weighed pounds.
Going hack to the house we saw
more evidences of Mr May’s indus
try. Two barns well filled with
corn, a “smoke-house” containing
severrl hundred pounds of as pret-
ty cured bacon as we have seen in
