,St. George, March 3.—St. George
was visited today by a disastrous
fire when the Methodist church and
Utsey Hotel were Completely de
stroyed. The alarm was given
about 12 o’clock and dt was discov
ered that the' roof of the two story
Utsey Hotel, a frame building, was
a mass of flames and was soon de
stroyed. The fire crossed the street
and caught the--- Methodist church
and it .was but a few momenta be
fore this was also destroyed. Heroic
effort was made by the volunteer
Are fighters to save the church, but
the lack of water hindered them in
their work. Several buildings lo
cated In different parts of the town
caught from the flying sparks but
they were soon extinguished. At
one time it looked as if residences
located in the rear of the church
would catch but the splendid work
of the volunteers saved them.
The Rev. 8.'W. Henry, pastor of
the Methodist church, was In tha
midst of his morning service when
the alarm was given and his sermon
was not completed for the church
soon fell prey to the flames. Thi
lofts is estimated at about $10,000,
with , about one-third insurance.
The Utsey Hotel was the onlv
commercial hotel in town and It is
«*\pected that will be rebuilt at an
early date. The Methodists will no
doubt in the very near future erect
a handsome new brick building on
their lot.

Half Your Living
Without Money Cost
We are nil nt n danger point. On
the use of good common sense In our
1018 farm and garden operations de
pends prosperity or our ‘‘going broke.”
Even nt prorent high prices no one
can plant all or nearly all cotton, buy
food and grain at present prices from
supply merchant on credit and make
money. Food and grain is higher In
proportion than are present cotton

It’s a time above all others to jday
safe; to produce all possible food. '
grain and forage supplies on your own
acres; to cut down the store bill.
A good piece of garden ground, !
rightly planted, rightly tended and
kept planted the year round, can be l
made to pay nearly half your living. It
will save you more money than you
made on the best three acres of cotton
you ever grew!
