. v
Columbia, Jan. 28.—The appro
priation bill wae reported to the
House Friday of. last week, which-
is about the earliest such bill has
gotten out of the Ways and Means
committee in several years. This
required hard work on the part of
the members, and it is a feat of
which they feel a, Just pride. Usual
ly the early adjournment of the Ick-
islature is blamed on the failurevto
get the appropriation bill in. This
year if the session is 1 prolonged
there will be a,different reason. .
The appropriation bill carries with
If items totaling (3,154,768.85. and
there are several items yet tp bs
added, or rather whfeli the members
will add on the floor of the House,
or by an amendment in the Senate.
The levy will be raised according
to this bill one-fourth of a per cent,
which is less than it WM feared
would be possible. This week will
be taken up with discussions of this
bill, and the effort ‘to get through
other legislation, and It Is thought
there may be a sine die adjournment
next week.

The committee on offices from
the grand Jury baa requested the
members of the Colleton delegation
to secure the paaaafe of an act re
quiring the Comptspller General to
•end an expert accountant, and to
employ one to accompany Auditor
Vann to Walterboro and recheck
certain parts of the report made
by Mr. Vann, In his recent cheeking
dp of tho offices of tho county. The
grand Jury takes the position that
the intereets of the county and of
the officers involved ‘require that
the matter be further investigated
and that If there should be found
that Mr. Vann was not correct, be
should not receive pay for his work,’
and that If he be found correct it
should be in such shape thaUtherj
would be no further question' on the
part of any person in the county as
to < the correctness of their findings.
It’ is thought that this commission
of three export accountants might
arrive at a conclusion which would
be without question.
It is thought the delegation will
secure the passage of such an act at
-once.
