The House of - Kepresentath'ex
last week passed the Australian bal
lot law, which in the opinion of The
Press and Standard, is the best ac
tion ever taken to safeguard the
hdbesty of elections in this State.
We have heard of dishonesty in
elections, and of this and that fac
tion, or candidate buying office, in
Colleton county there has been
fraud in elections, and vote buying
has been a* common as the pur-
<*f merchandise r.j s store. In
certain elections, wml by certain
candidates. This lias i •, > en possi
ble only because the purchaser of
a'vote could see to It that the voter
delivered<^he goods. Many a votei
haa been marched up to the polls
and voted by achemlng and desig-
tng politicians. • Xo in many cases
the results of 5 elections have not
been the boneat choice of the elec-
tora. -Coder the Australian ballot
system, this will no longer be per-
routed*' A booth will be provided-
Into which the voter will/ re'tir»
alone, and prepare his ballot with
out let or hindrance, and withont
any outside Influence, \o on© will
be able to know who the voter cast
his ballot for, and it will !>.. a poor
business man who pdll purcha*«v
what he cannot deliver, for it Is
pretty safe to say that the vote-
hpytng politician will not put up
money on'any voter unloss he is as
sured that the vote will be deliver
ed.
Thla forward step on the part of
the. legislature will be of far reach
ing and good results. There should
be more honesty in elections, and
betm men will be Induced to offer
when they know they will have a
fair chance and,* /gu election.
