The old contest over the office of game warden cafne up In the Senat-3 for consideration Thursday, although Senators debating declared there was no personal Issue involved. A bHI introduced at the last session had for its object the maintenance of A. A. Richardson as chief game warden and put the election of tl.*at officer in future in th* primary. Governor Manning vetoed the bill, and the discussion was precipitated when Senator Williams of Aiken asked for consideration of the gov ernor’s message of veto. The Age of Chauffers. Senator Friday, of Orangeburg, introduced a bill making it a mis- demeano’’ for anyone under the age of sixteen, to drive automobiles. Further efforts to kill this bill were made Thursday. The age limit was reduced just to 14, then an effort; to beat- it entirely failed, but anoth er change in the age made 12 years the limit - The reason state*! for reducin. t!i<j age limit was that men would become increasingly i scarce during the war, and to pro hibit younger boys from driving cars' would be a hardship on women and children. ' . ‘ Changing Governor’s Term. Repr*-Untatlve Duckworth, of An derson. has, introduced a hill mak ing the term of all State officers I ,Jour \«ars. Under this bill the govern )'.' will be ' ineligible for o second term. Repeal State Income Tax. , | Senator Sinkler of Charleston is the Qpthot- of bill repealing, the State income tax, which the Senate passed 'V- Lr 16. He declared that with fed*^;il and State taxes on in come tb" taxation was unjust. The failure of State enforcement impar tially was given as 'another reason to repeal it. Speed Limit, HO Miles. Representative [ftedmon, of Cal houn, had the* House pass his bill Increasing the speed limit of auto mobiles to twenty miles from fif teen. It is now in the'Senate. steering Committees. \ Proposals were made in both houses for “steering committees’’ to be appointed to have direction over legislation. " r X An important bill which passe i from second to third reading Wed nesday, was the one revising . and consolidating the lawi relative to free scholarships and free tuition. One hundred and sixty-nine free scholarships are created for Clem- son with a value of $100 each. In addition 51 bOneficiary agricultural scholarships are ^rested at a value of $100, each for Clemson, open to young native men of South Canditw 18 years or over. One nonnai scholarship from each county, valu ed at $100, with the remission of term and tuition fees is created .for the University of South Carolina. Scholarships, valued’, at $100, ar«* created for each county, the number to be the same as the number of representatives in .the House, for Winthrop college. Each county is allowed at least, one beneficiary scholarship at The Citadel, the mil itary college of South Carolina. Friday Exempted Farmers.
